I am attempting more and more as time goes by to try and do away with having to buy coins on ebay. I was wanting to get information on online coin shops. Which ones people have bought from, which they think are the best and if you haven't bought online (other than ebay) then what are your reasons for staying away from them. This is for future reference for myself and anyone else on the forums as I don't currently have money for buying coins but come tax time all my state refund is going to my collection. I might be able to squeeze out a few here and there if we get overtime again also. Thanks for your help and links will be helpful. Edited by Irishraider 09/03/2006 4:20 pm

I'm with Irishraider! I would just like to know a couple of "Mom and Pop" coin web sites. No specialties necessarily, that other members have dealt with and trust.

There are some good honest sellers on ebay, you just have to find them. Most all the smaller stores have jumped on the ebay bandwagon also because of all the customers they can reach.

Fengk is right, Teletrade and Heritage have some really nice stuff. Just figure the buyers premiums into the cost of the coin. One place online to avoid is BezalelCoins. Shabby coins and nonexistent service, they're every bit as bad as anything on ebay.

Debbie is right on the money. No slabs. Just plain old honest coins for people to buy at a fair price to add to a collection. I know Heritage and Teletrade are good sites for the expensive slabbed types of coins but I can't afford those. I have looked at this website http://emporium.turnpike.net/M/mikec/index.htmlbut have never bought anything from them as I am reserved on buying online due to various awful ebay experiences but my local coin shop doesn't really have the things I need to complete my sets either. They pretty much put the nice expensive stuff out and then the rest of what they got is AG-G it seems. Although most of my Liberty nickel collection is G-4 it would be nice to have a choice without getting ripped off. Same deal with my Mercs and Frankies.

ebay is the best online coin shop, imo. I buy errors and ebay has a ton of them and regular coin shops just don't carry what I'm looking for and If the did, (there are a few shops that specialize in errors), the prices are generally much higher that ebay. Good luck.

I found what looks like a very nice Canadian online coin shop for all you Canadian coin collectors. I wouldn't mind buying from them. http://www.colonialacres.com/home.shtmlI suppose the only real way to find out is to buy a few things and see how it goes.

Now this is a thread worth following. I've purchased several hundred coins on ebay, and have not experienced a bad transaction so far - knock on wood - but I'd definitely be interested in finding some other sites that offer decent coins at reasonable prices.

That is the whole purpose of why I started this topic. Not saying that I will never buy anything off of ebay again but rather I would like to have choices. Does everyone know what I mean? I am not trying to bash ebay into non-existence, not that that would ever happen, but I have never been one to support monopolies wholeheartedly either. I just thought it would be nice if we all had a resource we could all use to help us find better ways of getting the coins we need and help us not to get ripped off so much. After all, this is a community. Correct? The things I hate about ebay is the enormous amount of shysters versus the few good sellers. It only seems to be becoming worse and worse. The things I have problems with are the coins received that were shown or promised at a higher grade and you get less than what the auction showed or the $12 in shipping costs for a $5 coin because someone wants to cover all the fees they have to pay to ebay and Paypal. I have come to a point where I simply refuse to bid on an auction if the S&H is above $5. No matter how bad I need that particular coin, I will not do it. I know ebay instituted a grievance system on shipping but nothing will come of it unless it is just totally egregious. The prices for coins have gone through the roof on ebay also. I know it is an auction format but some of the people are just sending the prices through the roof where an average Joe like myself can't compete. I know this sounds like a woe is me statement, but it isn't. I watch auctions endlessly, sometimes 50 at a time just to see where the prices end up at. It is unbelievable what some coins are going for. For instance, the SGS slabbed fraud coins. Not that I bid on them but these people have way too much money and not enough knowledge. It is these people who are driving up the prices. I want a normal coin shop to go to where I can look around at what they got and without the clock ticking down and the price escalating, make a decision on whether I want to buy that coin or not. Well, that is my Colbert rant and rave moment. Thanks for listening. Dean Irishraider

I also have not had any bad experiences on ebay and they are a good source when looking for specific date and grade. I have done business with smyrna coin shop, nice people and great coins. If you are looking for rare dates most of the coin shops I have browsed have little inventory. I also collect Chinese Silver Panda's as they are beautiful. I deal with two china based web dealer that have been great. www.smyrnacoin.com

Keep in mind, not all those sales are real. There are people that have throw-away ID's and put in million dollar bids on those items just to nix the sale.

Is there no way for ebay to catch these guys? I know it would be very hard because of the vastness of ebay but you would think with all of the resources and money they have they could do more.
