So, what do I have here?
Is this an S over S over S ?
or an S over S ?
or an S over D ?

I sure hope it's an S over D!
I cut this from a mint set that was missing the 1970 D Half for the past 30 or so years.
Best picture I can make is this one. Thanks!

Looks similar to the first one on coppercoins, but your's appears to have the northern most S slightly west of the 001 mint mark. nlp

It is common to find these in mint sets. I have found 3 so far. nlp

Actually I think it is the first one NORTH 1970S-1MM-001
that mentions it is often found in mint sets. My image throws you off some.
The double punch is most obvious and clear at the top of the S where it looks like it is pretty much in the same position but just about halfway the thickness where it is punched again directly below.
I will look at those die markers, especially the C in AMERICA

It is 1970S-1MM-001.

These do tend to be found in mint sets, and often when they are found in 2x2s, they came out of mint sets. I know of very few that came from BU rolls, but it is possible.

One thing to note with this particular die is that it IS known in a nearly proof-like VEDS - I know of an example and am still working on getting back to the owner to buy it. I should have bought it when it was first offered to me.

I had to look up that VEDS and I learned it means "very early die state"

I don't know what to say this is and my image isn't all that sharp to say for sure but it is a very red coin without any carbon spots. There is a bit of toning starting around 1 to 3 o'clock on the obverse near the rim.

That is a great example of 1970-s rpm #1.

I do a ton of roll searching and have found most of the 1970-s rpm's, but not this one. This gives more evidence to the theory that most of these went into mint sets instead of general circulation.

I'd say yours is in the MS-66 range depending on the reverse, even with the rim hits! Great coin!

Go to a reasonable size show and look at all the 1970 mint sets. You'll likely find one at every show you go to where you have 20 or more 1970 mint sets to look at.
