Is it really worth driving from bank to bank in a very high pop city to find rolls that have most collectors scraps or to just buy them off ebay for a little over face value?

if you are looking for the best value, probably should just get them from banks. sometimes you can call ahead and ask if they have any or even if you have an account they may order you a $500 box worth at no fee.

You're not going to hit a home run every time, Casutherland. Like any endeavor, it will take time and you;ll go through plenty of rolls / boxes / bags and come up completely empty, but now and then you'll find stuff, and it will be worth it. You may even get lucky and stumble on a Franklin, Walking Liberty, or Barber. I haven't found any of them lately, but over my time searching, I have found a roll each of the Franklin's and Walking Liberties and a single 1901 Barber.
Good luck.

Depends your preference. I, personally, have never managed to get a roll of halves because almost everyone around where I live collects coins. So I just buy loose halves whenever I get the chance. Occasionally, the teller is nice enough to let me look through their stash of halves in the tray so I can pick the one(s) I want.

Yea, I really can understand that because where I live, there's like 5-10 coin shops and apparently a ton of people collect because NONE of the banks hardly ever have any Kennedy's. I seriously feel like that every time I buy a roll I just get peoples scraps.

Luck of the draw... I just finished 10 boxes and got 3 40%ers and some NIFC's. The 6 boxes last week had zip. I picked up 4 coins during a check deposit and 1 was a 40 %er... Luck of the draw...

there is a lot of variability. could go $10,000 in a row without a single piece of silver, or could get lucky and find a collection someone turned in 5 minutes before you walked into the bank. You will get skunked more than you find stuff, but it can be fun when you do find stuff.

If you can become friends with a teller, have them alert you when some halves come in. It wouldn't hurt to try, and you might get some nice silver/proofs/NIFC out of it.

Depends on the are you live in, some places still have a good amount of silver, some don't have diddly squat box after box, only one way to find out though so best of luck if you try it out once you hit some AG theres no going back! Always remember to have fun don't get caught up in the "I HAVE to find silver mode"

Ya I kinda feel like that sometimes lol, but when I spoke with the teller at my bank she said that she hadnt seen any silver much in years but she is saying that from just eyeing it. Not from specifically searching. I live in a pretty rich area so I think some stuff could pop up easily.

In about 20 boxes, I have found probably ball park around 500$ in silver. Now I orderd from 2 banks but now only 1. I don't do drive arounds since I live in a big town. But you should try it, it's different for everyone.

I find when I'm in the poorer areas of town I get better coins BC they just get rid of everything to get money--rich people dont get rid of silver IMO

Target the ethnic areas, particularly those with lots of immigrants. These people generally aren't familiar with U.S. coinage composition.

It's been a little while since I've struck any silver (either 40 or 90%). I do try to call ahead and I have a neighbor who works at one of my bank branches. I have always had a theory of hitting banks near retirement communities in hopes of Grandpa cashing in all those old halves. LOL I guess it's just hit or miss. My best was awhile ago: https://goccf.com/t/34228
