O.K. So, it's an 1883-P, only 7 or so are with clashed letters, (I'm assuming the clash is strong enough for letter transfer), out of that 7 or so, around 3 of them have clashed with same rotation/location, out of those 3 there is one with obvious die scratches that match this coin, So, there is only one that has the same die scratches - the vam-17B - your answer. Is this an acceptable answer format? the what & the why? in reality, I looked at the photo, saw clashes then saw the long die scratch down the neck, I knew what is was without searching (just due to previous knowledge of this VAM)... a 17B

well put Dave, this is my point of this Vam-it...its not only a learning thread, though early in my posts...it will be simpler and harder as the boundaries are understood...

once this one is done, I have one I would like to post. its a 1878-S and is pretty simple to attribute if you know what to look for. This one isn't very valuable but there is a sub-varierty that is sought after and on a couple well known lists that makes it more known

Ok this is a 1878-S and as was recently discovered in this thread the books are not great for this date/mm combination. This one isn't very hard to attribute so the ones that are very knowledgeable in VAMming please give it some time before you let the cat out of the bag to let the others try and figure it out also. If there is problems figuring it out I will post more pictures later on (but I don't think it will be very hard for most, even the new VAM collector should be able to identify it rather quickly I believe)

I just noticed the picture of the reverse isn't good enough to make out one of the main attributes so I am adding this one
