This coin was my first VAM, It's a 1878P a year full of revisions as they were trying to get up to speed in productions far greater than ever before...That resulted in many problems for them and many die variety's for us...This year/series has so many great examples of true doubling, as well as many many more vamming points of interest. One of which is the DIE variations, which for this year there were many REV dies used..In general for most other years one uses the date and Mint Mark location to discern which direction to follow to complete the coins attribution...In this year with so many REV dies used one must account for the reverse type as a leading clue to figure out what the VAM might be...Many have studied this year so I have decided NOT TO CLAIM VICTORY for the one who figures this VAM out, but rather open it up to all you lurkers to seek the answer as well, an most of all the reasons why...that is what vamming is all about..the reasons why one VAM differs from another....
so to all of you, let's VAM-IT

First clue....as there are well over 200 PLUS variations known to date for 1878, this is an 8 Tail Feather, so it narrows the choices down between VAM 1 and VAM 45..

First of all, since it is an 8TF, that narrows it down to vams 1 through 23 (not 1 through 45).... Secondly, 10 vams share that reverse, and the pictures that you have supplied are common to all of them... The LI in Liberty shot does little to assist in attribution, nor does the thumbnail size photo of the obverse.

First off the (F) of OF narrows it down to the Vam-3,4, 5, 14.6, 14.7, 14.11, 14.12, 14.14, and the 14.17 as they all share the same rev.

Actually...... No, it does not narrow it down to just those that you mentioned Russ.

The date has the right cracks but the photo is a little blurry there the light crack between the L and the "U" of PLURIBUS was the clincher

are there any more pictures of the Obverse? we all seem pretty sure its the A1C reverse but the Obverse is what we need to see, it looks close to the VAM-3 but need to see at least the whole LIBERTY because it could be 14.14 also (which would be allot better than VAM-3). All of these share the same Reverse so we don't need all the pictures of the Reverse, its the Obverse pictures we need

I just cant see any diagnostics on that picture of the Obverse, the picture of LI of LIBERTY you have could be either the 3 or the 14.14 in my opinion, and I would need to see at least a couple more letters to tell for sure, or to rule them out

The L in Liberty looks wrong for the Vam-3 and as it's said the die is the die and the photo posted of the "L" looks nothing like the Vam-3 and with the photos that are up there I am left with just the cracks I see.
