The area around the eagles claws. There are hairlines, going in all directions, they are not scratches, it almost is like looking a peice of fiberglass. The lines are raised, and follow no pattern. What would cause this? Sorry about the photos, I don't have camera that takes real closeups, only one with a telephoto lens. So I am using my webcam and my microscope. My 1921-P VAM-3F's show similar whimsical die polishing lines in that same general area, although not as close to the talons, I think, as yours. Just for the record, can you see numerous raised dots around the AR of DOLLAR, or the first S of STATES?

I am going to find a way to take a better pic of it, yours seem to follow (at least it looks like it in the pic) mine don't follow any directions. Some are straight, some are looped, some curve left some curve right...I will try to borrow a smaller camera and see if I can make it work...thanks

SuperDave your picture looks closer to mine. There are some dots at the AR but more pronounce in the LL of DOLLAR. My hairlines are in the same area as yours, but it completely covers that area and between the to the left of your picture that space between the leg it is completely covered with these lines..

Well, you've sure got my interest. I'm looking forward to pics of the whole reverse - can you scan? Here's another possibility for you: http://vamworld.wikispaces.com/1921-P+VAM-3GMy examples of this coin don't show the die polishing, though.

That's not a known pitting pattern.

Looking even closer, did not know it was significant of the pitting, The right tip of the wing and the letters A M E C A in the word America also has some pitting, some strong some weak is this significant?
