I've just left the U.K and have a large bag of change that I have accumulated during my stay. I had a look through it and took out some things that were worth taking out (mainly just shiny, new coins but I found a penny with several Cuds on it and a 2 pound coin the is slightly obtuse (about 15-20 degrees) ) I was wondering if there are any varieties, mint marks, rare dates or anything like that which I should keep my eyes out for. Can anybody help? Thanks. Edited by Mitchell 01/01/2011 10:46 am

Not really much in the way of variety in British coins, other than a dateless 20p of the new shield variety and the general commemorative 50ps and £2
The £1 have a different design for each year, though the last three have seen the same one. Only 1998 and 1999 did not circulate!

Thanks for the reply. I have found a 50p commemorative and two 2 pound commems. I haven't found a dateless 20p.
I haven't found any 1 pound coins worth keeping. They all seem to be really worn and scratched. Why is this? Are they made of a really malleable metal or something?

I have wondered the reason why since I moved here in 1998. Unless you grab one fresh from circulation, then appear in the condition that you descrbe.
Which 50 p and 2 pound coins did you find?

I found one of the Olympic 50p's (the swimming one) and The 2 pound coins were the 1999 rugby world cup and the 2006 bicentenary birth of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. I also found the 2008 Beijing Olympic Passover coin, but must have accidentally spent it. Edit: I just realised that I said, in the first post, that the £2 was obtuse. I meant upset.

Wow, considering that I live in the UK and have never had the Beijing coin given in my change, nor any olympic 50ps, you have done well. I guess you were in the South, seems to be where all the commemoratives go!!

I found them all in London within a week. I didn't find any in the other 2 weeks I was in Chipping Campden. It's very strange that you can barely find any in the north (or mid-north in my case).

I grew up around that way and only really ever got anything when working with money. They probably just ship these coins off to the big banks for the new coins, and then they trickle down to the other banks.
Where I work at the moment we get 50ps in, though it is always the same two or three types of 50ps. We do seem to get quite a few £2, but not the london olympics coin from 1948 or whenever it was issued in 2008. Plus I get people shaking their heads when I tell them I want that coin.

LOL. I ask people for coins too and get the same response.

Been doing some research, there are things to look for. 2008 5ps that are alligned wrongly, apparently 3 have been found a full 180 degree wrong and quite a few around 40 degrees. £2 coins, 2008 without a dot between def and Elizabeth at the bottom of the coin!

The £2 without the dot is the result of a filled die IMO.

One possible reason for your badly worn pound coins is the large number of counterfeits in circulation over here. These are often in brass alloy rather than cupro-nickel and, being softer, wear badly. Chris Wren
