They are in the same league as colorized quarters.
They have no numismatic value. The colorized $2 bills are worth two dollars.

Rule #1
Always stick with collecting ONLY things that are as close as possible to the exact condition they were in when they left the mint..
and the mint doesn't paint coins or currency.

Now only if the engraving and printing would actually print commemorative notes I would be a happy guy. But nooooo....the mint has to keep producing comm coins.

Regardless if legal or not, the money police really don't care about colorizing our monitary system. That is about as important as melting our coinage. It goes on and on and on all the time. And try to imagine how many thousands or millions of people buy that stuff all the time.

I see the ads for these on TV and laugh every time I see one. I have to wonder who would actually buy these, but there must be a market or they wouldn't keep it up.

I would pay $2.25 each. They are kind of pretty.

The sad part is that lots of people do buy them thinking they are something special. Just yesterday my daughter asked me if I wanted to get some of those for my collection. Problem is big heart but no knowledge. And yes I did my best to explain to her that I appreciated the thought but they are not worth the money.

My nephew who is just starting to show interest in coin collecting caught that ad on TV and came to me very excited about the new two dollar bills that the mint was releasing this year!
I had to burst his bubble when I informed him that they would never be worth more then two dollars and that they are not a product released from the mint.

They are no more illegal than the gold plated qtrs. or the colorized coins....in other words, it isn't illegal at all for private companies to do this. They just can't mislead the consumer to think that it's an original Mint product once they've "changed it" like that. Sadly, this will sell to tens of thousands of people in the "NON-numismatic" community. If it looks "pretty" or "cool", they'll buy it. These folks are only on the fringe of the hobby, and if they continue with their education and knowledge in a positve direction within the hobby...eventually they'll realize their "error" in the purchase. But those who remain on the fringe for life......well......they'll be up at 3:00 am buying these $2.00 bills and gold plated ATB qtrs. from HSN, keeping them and their ilk in business for a LOOOOOOOONNNNNG time to come.

I personally don't think they're that bad looking. A lot of people here say that they're worth no more than $2, but they clearly are. People are paying $10 for themright now making them worth about $10 imo... Will they hold value is a different story. Yes they are not a mint product, but neither are Disney Dollars. Look them up on ebay. There's a market for them (only know this because of my wife). They show up at coin shows (the Disney dollars) and sell for a pretty nice premium over there face value. Lot of long time collectors here and if it's not silver/gold/mint coins they write it off as worthless. Kind of like paper money in general. I will agree that I doubt there will be a continued market for these, but don't let everyone discourage you from owning one if you think they're cool. It is your collection, so put what you want in it. Just realize that everyone is informing you they are not US Mint bills. Now for everyone to share some knowledge with me - if they're not from the Mint how can it say this is Legal Tender on it?
