I LOVE collecting Newfoundland coins, and I believe that NO CANADIAN COLLECTION IS COMPLETE WITHOUT THE NEWFOUNDLAND SERIES. These are so much cheaper compared to similar mintages of the Canadian series, and the they can be incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to locate in grades AU and higher.
Btw I have been trying to locate an 1873 (plain) in EF+ for a couple of years now without any luck... does anyone out there own one of these coins?

some very nice coins there ! I am a Nfld coin collector .. not much into the notes though I do have one of each produced .. I love collecting the coins and living in newfoundland right now its odd that it is easier to buy from other parts of the world than right here ... I just skimmed through this thread as I am at my office eating lunch : P ill input a little more later ..
but I do have a large newfoundland collection about 500 or 600 coins .. I just love them and the fact that it is rare to find coins like these minted in such low numbers in mint state .. most of my collection are pretty good coins but I still have a lot that I do not have yet ... << Staff Edit - Rules Violation >> I have just about every year of every denomination except the 1800's 50c pieces I have not completed those yet ...

Unfortunately I can't see the links from PCGS due to not having coinfacts. I would love to see some of the 50 cent and 20 cent pieces.
Quattronewf, I'm in BC and most of the places I go have an okay selection of NFLD coins but all low grade. It's just so hard to find higher grades. I did pick up a binder full of coins from an old dealer here so I'm sitting on a lot of coins at the moment too. I'm currently not working on any type at the moment just buying the grades I want as I find them. Getting all the Victoria Halves in EF is very hard I'm finding.

I live in Newfoundland. I had about 20 Newfoundland coins, But I sold them all individually except one 50 cent coin about 5 years ago. A few months ago, I decided that I wanted a complete set of Newfoundland coins ... more of a heritage thing than anything else. I wanted my children and grand kids to see a full set of Newfoundland coins. To date, I have 36 Newfoundland coins collected. I am hoping to get all coins at VF-20 or better. I like fredor's post ..... very informative. Hopefully, I will live long enough to complete the set.

Newfoundland made the decision to introduce its own decimal coinage in 1863, but the first coins were not issued until 1865, with 1, 5, 10 and 20 cent pieces, as well as $2.00 gold pieces being issued that year. 50 cent coins followed in 1870, with 100 cents equal to a Spanish 8 real. The coins were all struck in England until 1913, sometimes at Royal Mint London without a mint mark, and sometimes at the Heaton mint with a small H mint mark. No coins were made from 1914 to 1916, and when coinage resumed in 1917 many of the coins were then minted at the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa with with a small C mint mark on them. This is an extensive series of coins, with most issues having relatively low mintage. The pre-1920 coins circulated extensively, and many of the examples we see are either very worn, damages, or both. Finding nice attractive circulated specimens is often difficult, and mint state examples very difficult (nearly impossible for some dates). In spite of this, the prices can often be very reasonable relative to their scarcity when one does find them. The last Newfoundland coins were struck in 1947 (1, 5 and 10 cent pieces) more than a year before Newfoundland joined Canadian Confederation to become Canada's 10th Province. The coins largely stopped circulating after Newfoundland joined with Canada in 1949, and most Newfoundland coins newer than 1940 are today found with very little wear on them.

Did you know about the 1864 bronze trial one cent coin? Also from Newfoundland, a bronze trial of an 1864 cent in ICCS SP-62 sold for $2,500 on an estimate of $3,000 to $4,000

fredor, you did drum up interest in these coins. Before this thread I knew almost nothing about Newfoundland coins, and these posts educated me more than anywhere else. Wikipedia has a few pages on Newfoundland coins which helped also.
The one cent coins should be easy to collect. I've made one of my lists of those to get.
Large cents
_1865 (240,000) _1872H (200,000) _1873 (200,000) _1876H (200,000) _1880 (400,000) _1885 (40,000) _1888 (400,000) _1890 (50,000) _1894 (200,000) _1896 (200,000) _1904H (100,000) _1907 (200,000) _1909 (300,000) _1913 (400,000) _1917C ( 702,350) _1919C (300,000) _1920C (302,184) _1929 (300,000) _1936 (300,000)
Small cents
_1938 (500,000) _1940 (300,000) _1941C ( 827,662) _1942 (1,996,889) _1943C (1,239,776) _1944C (1,328,776) _1947C (313,773)
I'm just going to stick with the one cent coins as they appear affordable. And as others have said, they're underrated and as more take interest in this series the prices will rise. I've already received a couple so I'm on my way. Thanks for introducing me to these.

The other day on ebay I bid on several small cents, and was outbid in the last few seconds. I hate when that happens! I'll just try again.
