Was this coin silver or cupro-nickel? I have had it since 1966, and always thought it was silver.

A local (Washington state) coin dealer told me it was clad, and offered up 50 cents for it.

I still have the coin.

this is very interesting. I suppose a dealer could just be plain wrong but what I don't understand is why he wouldn't verify his knowledge. I have to believe he had a krause catalog or something to reference to satisfy both the seller and buyer.

Am I the only fellow who is suspicious of dealers in general?

Can we all say CROOK

I know we all have war stories but I think that whenever you talk to a "for profit" coin dealer you have to keep one hand on your wallet at all times. The biggest profits come when you underpay and overcharge.

So be forewarned - KNOW what you are doing BEFORE entering the dealer's lair.

Let's not be too cynical about dealers. There will be crooks and there will be decent people just trying to make a living. I've never heard of a business person buying dear and selling cheap (well not ones that survive).
The dealer mentioned in the original post was either
a. a crook looking for the sucker
b. generally ignorant about what he's dealing in or
c. just couldn't be bothered.

Whether the mentioned dealer is a, b, or c, he doesn't seem like he's worth coming back to!
