... but I have only eight in my hand.

This is something similar to what I did in the British forum.

I ran across this old photograph which I find fascinating. Nine European monarchs brought together by somber circumstances parading in all their glory, and all on the brink of a big war. I find it interesting that Nicholas of Russia is absent, he was a family after all ...
So, here it is:

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...

Now, all nine were featured on the coinage of the respective countries, and I have most of the "dudes".

In order of appearance on the picture. Top row:

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
Haakon VII of Norway on 50 ore 1919.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
Ferdinand I of Bulgaria on 50 stotinki 1910.

Now, I'm missing Manoel of Portugal (although I have his predecessor). Please feel free to post a pic of your Manoel!

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
Wilhelm II of Germany on 3 mark 1909.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
George I of Greece on 2 drachma 1911.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
Albert of Belgium on 5 francs 1933.

Bottom row.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
Alfonso XIII of Spain on 50 centavos 1904.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
George V of England on 6 pence 1928.

Nine-Kings-In-The-Deck-...
And Frederik VIII of Denmark on 25 ore 1911.

Well somebody had to take the picture!

Just kidding, they would've hired a professional photographer.

And how many of these monarchs were related - by blood or marriage? (Don't look it up if you don't know - I'm too lazy to research the question myself and figured someone else would know, offhand.)

Nicholas must have been the discarded joker, although I do believe he was related to the English monarchy, wasn't he?

Somehow this photo is just a bit eerie ... isn't it? Thanks for posting it.

Certainly! Affinity for History and Geography, that's what led me to coins.
Nicholas II was Victoria's grandson-in-law while George and Wilhelm were blood grandsons of hers. So, these cousins would shortly start duking it out in the WW1, George and Nicholas on one side, Willy on the other.

What a great thread svslav! Wonderful photo of the "9 sovereigns", as well. One notable figure who was present for the funeral, but not in the photo is Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. (for those that don't know, his assasination sparked WWI)

Good point, schmidty! Were there any coins featuring the Archduke?

That I don't know...would certainly be a nice addition to your collection if there was! By the way, it's a neat collection. I might try one myself.

Thanks, guys! The idea of the topic came to me spontaneously after I flipped through a book (about Elizabeth II) and saw the photographs. Right away I was thinking "I wonder how many of these monarchs do I have?..."

Still, does anybody have a coin with Manoel (or Manuel)? Let's see a picture of it!

OK, finally got the missing king, the very last king of Portugal as well, Manuel II. Featured on 100 reis 1910.
Now I have a full house (but not in poker terms )

What an excellent thread. I don't have anywhere near the full house you have.

As for "So, these cousins would shortly start duking it out in the WW1, George and Nicholas on one side, Willy on the other." Well it was the poor/sucker conscripts and regulars that did the actual duking out at a cost of 9.7 million troop plus 6.8 million civillian lives!!

Personally I would have stuck all the bemedalled (and how did they merit those?) nobs in a barn and say "only one of you comes out".
