hello All, Sorry if I am bringing up a topic that has been done to death! I did some searches here but did not find what I was looking for,(but did learn some very interesting stuff!).

I received 2 ASEs for Christmas and that jogged my mind that I had picked up a few in 2003....and that got me thinking about a new line of coins to collect.

OK, I realize that right now may be the worst time to start buying Silver, so help me do this smart! What are the pit falls? Is Bullion better than Proofs or just differant?

I hope to do this slow.....very slow as I have about 40 ASEs I got back when silver was $5 an oz. but many are multibles of the same years. I hope to ask some basic questions on differant threads so this one does not get too long!
But any suggestions you can offer will be a big help!
Thanks, Paul.

Paul,

Basically, if you are just buying silver to hold on to as an investment, your best bet is to buy pre 1965 'junk' quarters, dimes and halves. Obviously you could do silver dollars also, however you should expect to pay a slight premium above their melt value. This also goes with ASEs. Your money will not go as far with ASEs since you will be paying a premium above their melt value. Stay away from proofs and graded ASEs as you will be paying a numismatic premium on these also, usually considerably more than the average premium on a plain-Jane ASE. Any more questions just shoot.

Thanks Mitchhailey, I see what you mean. I also think that Silver will go up this year,(as you stated in another post), but I do not see it going much higher than $40 an oz. w/o a major drop,(but then again when I was buying Gold at $300 an oz. I sold most all of it at $750+ as I was sure it would not go ANY higher!). I am not really looking at junk silver, this will be more of a small collection. I plan to stay with the bullion ASEs but will have to have maybe just one Proof, can't help myself! My hope is to trade some of the bullion rounds and bars I picked up ten years ago for ASEs. This way both parties make good. I get ASEs and the dealer gets Silver that will only go up in value. Now I just have to wait until the next local coin show!!
Thanks again, Paul.

I started collecting ASEs on monday. The way I am doing it is I roll searched halves. I got a full roll of 40% and went to my local coin shop. I sold them for a 2010 ASE proof and I got a 10 bucks back in change. I only need 2 more 90% for a full roll then I am going to go back and see if I can get a 1994 ASE proof. This is how I am going to fund my ASE proof set.
