Not MD. I think it's Die Deterioration,worn out die.Or maybe a plating issue.

It seems to be common on the zincolns ..I've even seen it on proofs so I'm thinking plating. Just my guess, we'll see what the pros say.

Try reversing the coin 180 degrees and take another shot of the area in question. That may reveal something this image doesn't show.
