Hi again,

Here's a $1 Liberty Head that I hope you could grade and give your opinion on, as well.

Not the best pictures, but my closest so far to represent the coin.

Thanks so much - chuckpb

Once again, I go to the CCF Coin Facts to get the Grading Criteria:

Liberty Head Gold Dollar General Grading Standards

VF20 Very Fine- LIBERTY on headband complete and legible. Knobs on coronet defined.

EF40 Extremely Fine- Slight wear on Liberty's hair. Knobs on coronet sharp.

AU50 About Uncirculated- Trace of wear on headband. Near full luster.

AU55 Choice About Uncirculated- Evidence of friction on design high points. Some of original mint luster present.

MS60 Uncirculated- No trace of wear. Light blemishes.

MS63 Choice Uncirculated- Some distracting contact marks or blemishes in prime focal areas. Impaired luster possible.

And while this grading criteria doesn't really address anything between VF-20 and EF-40, this coin obviously is better than VF20, but not up to EF-40 (due to more than slight wear on the obverse hair).

My best guess is VF-30 for this very nice example of an 1851 gold dollar!

Great looking example! My guess would be like Jake, EF-45, with a shot at 50 but more likely 45.

It's kinda unusual to see gold dollars with this much wear. I'd say VF30 or 35. I don't see any damage or evidence of cleaning.

the type ones did see circulation in several parts of the country and because of their small size they were often used to send money through the mail and the like, circulation of the type 3's was much more rare

A lot of fake gold dollars exist so you need to be careful. This one looks XF to me.
