OK...so I'm trying my hand at taking pics of some of these coins. First, I need some advice on taking pics and capturing the true look of the coin. When I take the pic without flash, I don't get any detail and the coin looks worse than it does in "real life". When I take it with flash, they look BETTER than they do in real life. See the following pictures of the same coin(more to come).

Anyway, see what I mean? Any other comments on my photography or the coin in general?

Lastly, a group of 67s and 68s. The 68s really are that orange and shiny, but what you can't see as well are a couple of really darkish smudges. Can anything be done about those areas? Also, the older coins are VERY dirty....some are almost greasy/grimey. Can anything be done for those? I know cleaning is generally a no-no, but these things are sorta gross even though it doesn't show well in the pictures. Any other general comments or guess as to grade on any of these and the other photos are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't really see anything that really detracts from the coins-there a lots of old Lincolns that look like that 20-s-my advise is to leave them alone. Copper is by far the most difficult coins to keep as they are-for really nice MS examples I would go the route of the Air tite holders-they're the best for long term storage.

There is a wealth of information on picture taking. Check out the Coin Photography forum here on CCF.

A few basic things I have learned:

Use macro mode on your camera - usually a picture of a flower.

Use a tripod and a timer so you are not trying to hold the camera steady.

Don't use the flash. A good light source and no flash is better. I have used GE Edison bulbs at various angles until I get good light without glare. Some people use a diffuser with good effect.

Use some photo editing software to crop your pictures. I use Google Picasa.

Getting good pictures is a lot of trial and error.
