I just found out my Silver Dollars that I have had since the 60's have gone up in value. I have 150 of them from 1879 through 1925. I am wondering if I should sell them now or wait since I heard they might go up. also since the price is going at a ounce would my Morgans be more valuable?
You can tell I am clueless. I got these coins when I was cocktailing in Tahoe for tips an just put them away. an if you asked me what condition they are haven't any idea. Any suggestions would be appreciated..

Of course they have gone up in value since then..if you sell them to a dealer then most likely you'll just get Melt(silver) value unless he gives you something more some great years....You could see if you have any of the semi or key dates or low minted years..post some pictures
and Welcome

Welcome to Coin Community, Temmuko.

Wait.

The value of any coin is a direct function of its' condition and rarity. As of yet, you do not know these details about your coins, and if you attempt to sell now you will leave the majority of their value unrealized.

Given how you obtained them, we can assume most will be in circulated condition. However, as aladinslamp mentioned, some dates are much rarer than others. Furthermore, Morgans are collected by die variety as well, and some of these varieties are valuable indeed.

I know the advice I'm about to give you will sound daunting, but you need to become knowledgeable about your Morgans (and Peace dollars). Knowledge is power and, in this case, knowledge is a lot of extra money on resale. Are you familiar with the mint mark location on your coins? On the Morgans (1879-1921), it'll be on the reverse, below the wreath and just above the bottom lettering. On the Peace dollars (1921-1925 - they overlapped in 1921), it will be on the reverse, just above and left of the eagle's tailfeathers.

So the first thing you need to do is build a list of your coins, by year and mint mark. We can then explore which of these have value by virtue of their year/mint mark, and which might possibly be value-added varieties.

Additionally, it will be important for you to create images of your coins. Not all of them, not right now, but down the road it will be of great assistance. For our purposes, a scanner will do as well as a camera; this is something we can discuss later.

Tahoe, eh? Sounds like you might have a better-than-average chance of having some Carson City Morgans in the mix. Each Morgan dollar contain 0.7734 troy ounces of silver for a total of 116 ounces times the current silver spot price of $29.50= $3400 in silver value. It is almost certain that the numismatic value of the coins will be greater than the silver value and you figuring out dates and mintmarks will be a step forward in setting the numismatic value.

I do a lot of selling of Morgan dollars. I usually buy around $22 and sell around $25. The main concern for their worth is the silver content and the current market. People say silver will hit $100 an ounce. People also said that 30-40 years and it went on a landslide and people lost their fortunes due to it. If you collect coins I would sell them off and buy coins that aren't affect so much by the precious metal market. Just my opinion I know other will disagree.

what you are not understanding is, the condition of a coin can make it worth allot more than melt value so selling it for melt will be like shooting yourself in the foot. Also there are the VAM factor. Some VAM's will raise the value ALLOT over the value of a another coin in the same condition and when you are talking about Morgans and Peace dollars they are all VAM's, but not all VAM's raise the value. Before I would ever think about selling I would learn to take clear pictures (sometimes even a scanner will do) and post them on this forum so not only can we give you a condition assessment but also may be able to tell you if you have any valuable VAM's which are rare that could make you allot more money than selling them for the value of the silver the coin contains. Even if silver hits $75.00 a ounce and you have a VAM-44 in MS-62, this coin would could sell for $17,000.00 (that is 17 thousand dollars) so as you see, selling it for melt would be a kick in the teeth, you understand what I am trying to say here?

Important dates and mint marks to check for: These are Morgan dollars. no mint mark Morgan dollars are minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. S mint mark is San Francisco, California. CC mint mark is Carson City, Nevada. O Mint mark is New Orleans, Louisiana. D mint mark is Denver, Colorado but you will find this only on 1921's.

Give us your list, but start with 1878 first.
We will be able to help you value your coins...

if you want to sell your silver coins now, then do some research by your self. Get a catalog, or use any website. First gain knowledge on the subject, try to separate them in to years, mint wise, grade wise, get their km numbers and then take a sample coin to your nearest coin dealer and ask how much he would offer for the coin. Do your maths in your mind, if it is worth, you can sell, you can even use e bay for instance to check current prices. If you think the dealer is not offering any price close to your expectation, you go home.

warm wishes.

As you have had these for sooo long, I would STRONGLY advise you as others are now doing..Take the time to KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE....Morgans are one of the top collected series.....Worth more than Melt prices...If melt went up. SO DOES the values of the coins....Granny sold her feather bed with the frame for $100 bucks, what a steal she thought.."What a price for and old feather bead" and the buyer
thought..WHAT A FRAME($5,000 antique bed) You really need to look at what you got and post some pictures...Many here will help you from being taken advantage of, because you don't know what you have...

All of the advice before mine is excellent.

Each is, by inference, is trying to get good value for your coins, but they are also trying to engender some interest within you to keep the good ones, perhaps, and become a coin collector.

If that is the track you go down, you won't be disappointed. There are a lot of folks on this Forum that have a lifetime interest in coins.

Perhaps I am miss-understood....I infer no approach to buy any of his coins..as many here also do....We do not like to be TAKEN ,due to his lack of understanding....but rather to inform him of how he can be taken....and to equip him with some knowledge so HE can chose his own path...Not mine, not there's...

No one has said nor have I seen anyone here say anything that would make me think they were trying to purchase his coins from him, and believe me I watch these types of posts closely because it is clearly against the rules of this forum. We have all just tried to educate him that instead of just thinking his coins silver value they may also have numismatic value that can outweigh its silver value

Since you mentioned "60s", "1879 through 1925", and "tips", it leads me to believe they are all in circulated condition and were used as gaming tokens, therefore I would find it difficult to think that any of them are in MS condition, so bargain bucket comes into my mind. Any of them being worth a great amount of money is possible but not very probable. I have looked at casino dollars before and the majority of them are very beat up from a collectors point of view. Can you sell them and make life a little nicer --yes, can you retire-- only for a month or two. There will be people on here who disagree with me and my advice to you would be hunt them down and sell those circulated coins to them.

They may be well circulated coins but pictures will tell the story....Post some pictures and a list of year and mint so those with more experience can let you know if you might have any key or semi-key coins...Its all good info...
