Vam's.. such a subject....while many who are interested...so few who post. the LURKERS are winning.......6,000 posts....and so few of 240-ish who reply....maybe 4%...That's rediculous... wouldn't it be nice if the majority would speak out...

Me too, Johnny. Thats why I've spent a lot of time 'lurking.' I like to read and learn before I open my mouth and sound like an idiot. And I can't get good pictures of my Morgans to ask questions, 'cause everyone knows you gotta have a picture of what you are talking about if you want a good answer.

If either of you happen to have any questions please ask, that is why we have this VAM area here on the forum. We try to help in any way we can to educate the new VAMmer so they will have the knowledge to be able to choose what they like and what they are looking at. There isn't anyone that I know that can tell you what every single VAM is (there are just way to many) but we can usually do the research and help you figure out what you are wanting to know

I can attest to the prior member's statement, I am a student in the learning process, I also will say, Bryan is a resident expert in this field, and I DO ask my share......

It is the nature of an online forum that lurkers will always vastly outnumber those who actually post. That's just the way it is. Many people don't feel as if they have an appropriate contribution.

I can understand that SD, but I must admit my learning greatly improved by taking part and asking questions...as well as lurking and studying others coins.....I believe it takes both sides to improve...but never should it only be one sided....

I can tell that you all know quite a lot about VAMs...that is why I read this post an learn from others' questions. Don't take it as though we lurke, and don't learn anything. I've learned a lot. I've also done my fair share of posting since joining this forum, I just have not posted any specific questions and or photos. I can't get proper photos yet and I have a new loupe on the way. The one I have is fine for now and I've noticed a lot of doubling, clashing, polish marks, die chips and rust spots that I would never have even noticed if not for this forum and the encyclopedia. I'm on my way...and I will have no problem asking questions when they come up. Thank you for the invitation and the hospitality! I will add that I did get a sour taste in my mouth about asking questions while I was a member on another forum. I won't say which one, I will however say it wasn't this one or VAMworld. Some of the members are obviously EXTREMELY knowledgable and write for major coin publications, however some of these guys have superiority complexes and there is a lot of 'talking down' too others and making the less knowledgable and financially secure feel less than adequate to compete or even hang around and ask questions or start threads. I think that may be why I've felt a tad gun-shy about posting some questions, but I won't feel that way from now on! Thanks Bryan, Dave and Aladinslamp for making it quite a bit easier to feel at home and comfortable here. I'll be posting some questions and photos as soon as I get some good close-up, detailed pics.

It seems like the more I learn about these VAM's the less I know. There are always coins that drive you NUTZ. Don't be bashful. Post up some pics and seek some help. Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes(although mine are getting older by the minute) will see something you haven't after staring at it for hours. nlp

Thanks for all your reply's and Hope there are yet more to come...Lurking can be just sitting back and learning while your not sure of what it is your looking at...or Just being to shy to guess..One must remember that many times is a small thing that leads to an attribution or there would not be so many...a simple photo of the OBV and REV is often not in focus and only date and the Mint Mark can channel a direction...(here's where the lurkers can jump in!) ASK for photo's of a specific area that can help to narrow it down!! NOT only for you,,,, as you study, but for other's with a little more knowledge, and follow the trail as the clues unfold....we all gain its a big mystery every one can join in on...

Quote: the LURKERS are winning I'm not so sure about that.... It depends on what you call "winning".... some shy folks feel that they are gaining knowledge without exposing themselves I guess.... but lurking should spark questions in a person's head.... without asking those questions, lurking in probably is just serving to confuse the lurker even more... I would hardly call that winning. If a topic is not interesting to me, I won't even bother reading it.... Threads like 'grade this coin', or 'what VAM is this 1886 S dollar' won't even get a hit from me, unless I see that one of my buds has posted it, and then I figure that maybe although I don't have anything constructive to contribute, I can at least slip in 'a 'funny or a snide comment. I know the value of not exposing too much about one's self.... nobody wants to be known as 'that idiot' or that 'know it all'.... but that is what makes the world go round.... I don't really care much about what folks here think about me.... I freely admit that I don't know anything at all about grading, values, or VAM attribution.... nobody expects too much out of me either.... the only thing that they do expect is what they have learned about my personality.... argumentative, contrary, tactless, etc. Yes, this is all true, and I have learned certain things about other folks here as well.... I have my own expectations of you... that is what makes things fun and interesting.... How much fun can lurking really be? I would very much like to get to know the lurkers, I really think that their input could help to nail certain things down that we who post wonder about in print.... It doesn't matter at all who you are, how old you are, or what you look like.... Gene is the only person here that knows what I look like, and he is the only person here that I know what he looks like (except I know Dave looks kinda like a snowman who hasn't got his head on straight). I really want folks to come out of the shadows and say 'Hi' (at least).... it wouldn't cost anything, nothing to lose, and everything to gain.... now that's what I call "winning".
