Hi,

I can't seem to find this particular coin in my Krause.

Would anyone recognise it?
I assume it's 4 heller (or possibly pfennig)

thanks

The coin comes from the Aachen (NW) area. In the 18th century Johann Gottfried von Blanche, the owner of Schönau Castle, wanted to get Imperial immediacy for his territory, and had these coins made. The somewhat presumptuous inscription - Reichsherrschaft Schönau - refers to that. In 1759 Prince Elector Carl Theodor arrested him, and Blanche had to stay in Jülich for five years ...

It's an example of the only coin ever issued for the Barony of Schonau.

In mediaeval Germany, the right to issue coinage was granted by the Emperor - one of the few powers the Emperor actually had. Apparently, the Baron of Schonau had no such permission to issue these coins, but issued them anyway. So his outraged neighbours, led by the Imperial City of Aachen, invaded and shut down the baron's mint.

Yeah, once in a blue moon that happens. ;) And indeed this is a 4 heller coin. The city of Aachen even made using these pieces an offense; the fine for using one was three gold guilders ...
