I was wondering how accurate the NumisMedia FMV prices are.

I'm assuming their prices are as correct as you're going to get, but that doesn't mean you can sell your coins for the price numismedia lists.
Numismedia seems to be the website to go to for coin collectors and dealers.

On the NGC website, there is a link in the news section that mentions Numismedia, so even a top grader like NGC accepts Numismedia's prices.

Always remember that those all are just guides and can vary from place to place as well as from coin to coin. By place to place I mean many coins are different prices in the West Coast areas compared to the East Coast. I know many dealers that tell me they love to go to shows in Florida since they can charge more than in other areas.
Just note that a price guide is a GUIDE, not a real value.

that is actually the only price guide NGC uses, they teamed up a couple years ago to give prices for NGC like PCGS does with their own price guide. That is all anyone can hope for is a price guide its not going to be anything concrete unless its updated almost daily and uses real world sales for their pricing. I think Numismedia is usually pretty close but not perfect

No price guide is perfect. As Just Carl said, it is important to remember they are just a guide; a starting point for negotiation. The real price of any coin at any given moment is always what the buyer is willing to give and the seller is will to take.

The guide may make you feel comfortable about the sale, but there is nothing wrong with giving a little more for a coin you really want, or taking a little less for one you really do not need (especially if your options are limited).

In addition to what others have said above, I think you also have to remember that Numismedia prices are for certified coins - so they come attached with an expert opinion that they are real, problem-free and in the grade indicated. This has some value. Because of this, I think Numismedia prices are on the high side if you are trying to compare raw coins, especially in lower grades or of lower value. I still use it a lot in spite of this limitation, but take this into account. I typically wouldn't pay Numismedia price for a raw coin unless I felt very very sure of it's grade, heritage, etc.

I do not believe so...

The prices listed within the NumisMedia FMV Price Guide represent our Fair Market Value determination for a properly graded coin within each category.
Emphasis is mine. They say properly graded, but not necessarily certified. That is, the grade is what it is, regardless of who determined it, as long as it is properly determined and agreed to by both the buyer and seller.

However, I could be wrong.

I think you are correct, jbuck. I think I got the PCGS and Numismedia rules crossed up and applied the PCGS price guide rules (which are for PCGS certified coins) and applied it to Numismedia.

Good catch.
