nice error!
but if it were a double strike, wouldn't the reverse have the same effect? I can see doubling on the letters, but not on the memorial

Thanks guys!
coppertop, value to be determined. I met a guy to buy a bunch of Ikes from and he told me he had an error he wanted me to see. I was expecting the usual old hammer job the way he described it.
So, I told him I would post it here and see if we could establish a fair value for me to offer him. So, if anybody has an idea, I'd appreciate it.
I'd really like to hear Mike Diamond's thought on it. Not just what it is, but how it happens.

Kinda like a "Matrix" movement.

Adam, I'm not sure if the reverse would have the same effect or not. There is some heavy MD on the upper right side of the Memorial that isn't showing up well in the pic.
The "U" in UNITED almost looks like a doubled die. It's really weird.

Quote: Kinda like a "Matrix" movement I like it! Another strange thing about the obverse: the motto has shadow characters around it, too. But, LIBERTY just looks kind of fat and wide.

What concerns me is that the same rotation isn't on the reverse.

I suspect this is an example of a coin being hammered into a softer metal such as a brass plate then rotated and hammered again. The brass plate receives an incuse image of the coin from the first hammering and then acts as a die to create a second raised distorted image on the coin.

That would be a real bummer.

PMD? I can't offer anything close to an educated opinion, but I like that at face value. Is it possible this cent was stuck in the collared die, and the obverse die rotated slightly before striking a second time? I've seen many double-struck Canadian cents with similar features on the portrait. I look forward to hearing what Mike Diamond has to say...
