There are machines that you put a quarter into that will imprint various patterns onto a penny. I used to have a Jimmy Carter one.

Technically, it is considered post mint damage and is not worth anything to a numismatist. In fact, were the underlying coin a rarity, it would severely impair its value.

Do you know how I can find out where this one came from? What the marks mean? I had assumed it was defaced.

I have not seen this counter stamped style before. I collect modern counter stamped cents and have around twenty. I will typically pay $1-$5 for a uncirculated example. Someone here will have some info for you on it I'm sure. I'd like to know too!

Some people will collect them as novelties, but there isn't much value over 1 cent in them. I have a few I pulled from circulation - a couple with U.S. states overstamped, and one with JFK.

I don't think there is any way to tell where a coin was counterstruck unless it actually says it on the punch itself. Allot of the designs were available everywhere that had those machines fenton talked about and there are allot more that were done at home with a metal punch and a hammer so no real way to date or say where it was done (only thing you know is it wasn't done before the date on the coin, but could have been done anytime after that date)

The imprint on the left almost resembles "The Bastion" in Nanaimo, BC. Course, I'm sure it's something else...maybe a historic fort somewhere?

No...... to me this looks like the Taj Mahal in India.
But, it is most likely some kind of "Las Vegas" thing or carnival thing from the '80's.
If Vegas had a mock up Taj Mahal in the '80s, then I'd lean that way.

I don't throw them away when I come across them......just can't bring myself to do it. But ALL denominations seem to suffer through this kind of thing in one form or another.
