Very interesting article -- http://www.pcgsblog.com/ -- concerning lower grade Morgans. Beginning of a new trend?

Wow that is interesting!

I always thought this type of thing might happen with Morgan dollars. Most were horded in vaults so the heavily circulated pieces are actually quite a bit less common than the AU/UNC ones for many dates.

Should I start buying up stacks of heavily circulated ones at local dealers?

Collectors can blame TPGs and dealers for all the evils that they want to, but some things collectors do to themselves..... Registry sets are one of them.... in this case, low ball registry sets.... it isn't for everyone, but for those who are affluent enough to have outgrown the high grade registry sets.... A phenomena born out of boredom, (stupid in my opinion), but very serious stuff to a good many folks.... I see that it is even beginning to overflow into the world of paper money as well.... It keeps the hobby alive for those who cannot find those mega rare coins, a whole new ball park.... a parallel universe... to me it is the twilight zone.... the way I understand it is that the coin must be low grade from wear, not from cleaning, or damage.

Start rubbing on those G and VG pocket pieces now, and sell to these rare individuals before the bubble bursts and folks wake up to the fact that the fortunes that they amass in such frivolous pursuit will only flatter their egos, but not their legacies.

I'm wearin'it.

So far, I don't own one (a lowball, that is) which cost me more than base value. Nor will I.

Somehow, I didn't really figure you as the low ball type.

It amuses me. Not as much as it did when it was an against-the-grain activity, though.

I have one low ball 1878 VAM-83 coin. The reasons I bought it was that its a long nock and because all of my other coins were in the higher grades. As Dave said, I didn't pay any more for it than I would have if purchasing any common date Morgan in any other grade. There are some big time VAMmers and others that are trying to put a whole registry set of these together. They are the ones that has the money to throw at the coins to get what they want and need for their set. You wouldn't believe how competitive these guys are about these low ball sets, I have just sat and read some of their discussions about them and they track these low ball coins the way some others track pedigree coins. Its amazing to watch these guys chasing these low graded coins just to say they have the lowest grade possible of a certain coin

One cool thing about buying PCGS-1 is that if the lowball craze ever dies out, you can always bust them out of the slab, resubmit to SGS, get an MS-65, and resell it on ebay. I don't think SGS goes below MS-65 that is their "zero".

SilverTurtle,

I actually really like that registry... I really like the Kennedy half. I'm amazed there's one out there that worn... I actually *would* pay a premium for that one...
