Hello all, I've always kept interesting coins in a beer mug for years and have finally decided to get a little more serious about collecting. Anyway I figured a safe place to start was with the US mint and proof sets from 2006 bought directly from the mint. The proof and silver proof sets look great, but on one of my quarters in the mint set, there is a noticable "smudge" or what looks like a burnt spot. This quarter is in the mylar package, so how could this happen? Is this some sort of error? (sorry no picture). Also I've noticed that most mint sets have either a blue or red band on top and bottom of the mylar package, but I received one with white stripes on top and bottom. Any significance to these colors? (besides the obvious)

Hello and welcome to the forum!

First off, without seeing a pic of the smudge, it is difficult to ascertain what it is. It is possible that it is a grease smear from the coin presses or some type of scuff. US Mint quality control is usually pretty good but ever so often a dog slips through. You might want to contact the Mint about getting a replacement as the sets are still available.

Secondly, the color strip on the mylar designates the Mint of origin. Denver is red and Philly is blue. The State Quarters use a different color code. I believe that one is black and the other is white.

Before you return it, make sure it is a smudge. Proof errors are rare. As such I would think that depending upon the error, you may want to keep it, and keep it in its original holder. That helps to prove it was a mint made error. Try to get some pics. up. Gusp
