My first assumption would be that someone was preparing this to become a love token. But, wouldn't the rim also have been filed down?

Any thoughts?

Your first assumption is correct Scoob... the reverse has been ground away..... and yes, the rim was filed, beaten, or ground down.... what you are seeing as the rim is not really the rim, but the remains of an effort to downsize the coin to get it to fit into a bezel.... Take a look at the rim of an 1838 dime... see the difference?

Just to be sure though, check the edge of the coin.... Is it reeded? (It should be..... even in that condition).

Clearly a difference, thanks Z.

No, there is no reeded edge, confirming what you have said. Thanks again!

I guess he decided he didn't like her that much after all!

Or maybe someone told him that girls like her are a dime a dozen, and being the typical guy, he needed the coin to go get his money's worth.

1838 Philly coins had large and small stars. Since it's damaged, it didn't seem to matter to determine which.
