Ok. Am I seeing things? Is this possible? I just bought a lot of lincoln cents off of craigslist. After going through 4 or 5 bucks worth I had set this one aside to get a better look. Is it a weak double die? I see doubling at the top right of the 9 and the bottom tip of the first 5. Of course the second 5 looks doubled too. Any thoughts? Mike

Sorry but this is not even close. What you are seeing is Die Deterioration. The big doubled die has a much bigger spread than this.

Of course this is a really weak one compared to the true ones, but if it is doubling, it's a cool find.

This one is what is marketed as the poor man's double die. It is very common.

I was just going to ask about that. I've heard of the poor man's variety.

I paid way too much for the lot to begin with and although there were a handful of cents in the teens, I kinda got screwed. Oh well.

a true 1955 doubled die is like a vertigo type of doubling, it is such a striking doubling that you won't have to even ask if it is one, you will know for sure.

I have seen pics before, I just thought this might be one that had a little doubling. I read up on this and understand them now.

there's no such animal as a poor mans double die! that's nothing but a ploy to sell the coin and nothing more

it has been selling these "poor mans" cents for far longer than ebay has been here so it's not an ebay scam just a scam

Your cent is definitely not a double die, but a regular 1955 cent. Sorry about that, but I doesn't hurt to double check..

Not completely true. What is ment by that statement is many coins, such as this one, are not real double dies but something that people can afford. Many people use them to fill slots in Albums all the time. The real ones sell for thousands of dollars so a coin for a filler at a really low price is what a lot of people do. At coin shows some sell for as much as $50 for ones in really great shape. Of course due to die wear most are not what you could call really high grades anyway. However, the one you show is actually in decent shape so would probably sell on ebay for a good deal as a Poor man's Double Die. Real ones look more like this

I would rather have an empty hole than pay good money for something that will never see a return
