They look a dull gray color, similar to aluminum.

If it is dull grey, it is almost certainly altered. A coin struck on a genuine unplated zinc planchet will still have luster like a normal coin. If it has been messed with, there will be no luster and the surfaces will be dull.

I'm not even sure what that error would be called

Umm, I gave you the proper name in my first post- unplated planchet error. However, it is more likely that you have a cent with stripped plating as that is what is usually found in circulation. Even though an unplated Zincoln is not a rare and valuable error, it is still uncommon enough that genuine errors are dwarfed by the number of alterations.

A always, biokemist is spot on. Importantly, if was struck on an unplated planchet, it would have original mint bloom. If it's dull, it has had the copper plating removed with chemistry.

Finding an aluminum penny out in the wild is like stumbling across the holy grail. $50 says it's a forgery or some sort of foul play.

One is forced to ask:

"How much does it weigh?"

Your cent could very well be aluminum due to the fact that they did mint aluminum cents for consideration as an alternative metal to the copper used to mint the cents at the time. The aluminum pennies were passed out to congressmen and officials in Washington DC at a meeting and many kept them. If your cent is the real thing then it is VERY valuable, but I'd keep it a secret due to the Secret Service. You wouldn't want them getting their hands on it or they would confiscate it and you'd never see it again! I'm pretty sure that the aluminum cents were minted in 1974. I could be wrong, buy I don't think so.

Wow, it looks like a penny. Congrats on your find.

In all seriousness, I hope you did not make a special trip to your dads house for only one bad photo.
