well, my dad is big into the pennies and it seems he found a 1998 Lincoln Cent that looks tinny/aluminumy. put a magnet to it and no stickage. before I go to the trouble of taking pics, does anyone know what this might be off the top of your heads?

It is a either a coin that has been messed with or an unplated planchet.

PS--it looks to be in uncirculated condition, with no scratches, etc. that I could see, so I doubt it's from someone messing with it.

Quote: before I go to the trouble of taking pics What's wrong with photos? Seems to me that if you want an answer without 'trouble' .... then you can do your 10 minute homework and show some pics. David

what's wrong with photos is I'm going to need to drive to his house to get the penny in question and photograph it, heh.
scooby, it doesn't look like the silvery cent in the video, but I think you might be right that there's some foul play involved.

Off the top I'd say it is a zinc penny that missed the copper plating part of process. I have seen a couple of them come out of circulation, but not as new as 1998. They look a dull gray color, similar to aluminum.

Certainly worth keeping as a souvenir. Might even be worth a little bit. Maybe check ebay to see if there if anyone is selling any and for how much.

Quote:Sounds like a science experiment like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_g_ml8tAnWE The guy is using a copper penny. Do you suppose that works on a copper-plated zinc penny just the same? Perhaps. It'd be interesting to do the experiment to see...

yeah, but the one in the experiment video looks like silver. this one doesn't seem to be the half-way stage of an experiment like that.
