Me (incognito):

hi how did you tone these coins they look cool let me know thx I wanna tone some my self

Him:

I have never seen any coins with colors like these have before starting this project. All I do is sell these for my friend who just inherited a HUGE collection from his father. My friend is a top Seattle area doctor and I doubt if HE is toning them. At least he told me he didn't and he isn't the type of person to lie and has no reason to lie to me about the fact that he got them that way. I REALLY wish I knew more about the history of these coins but I just don't. I'd help you if I could but unfortunately for me I don't know how to do it or what causes it either. They ARE kind of pretty though aren't they. Sorry and CHEERS! Robt.

Me:

Okay, well I'll be serious now. They're artificially toned. At least most of them. Someone is lying to you if you're telling the truth. natural toning never looks like this. Or someone ripped you off.

Him:

I told you about the origin of the coins as I know it. I make no claims about how the coins got this way because neither I nor the owner knows. I am not a coin or metal expert. Is there anything else I can help you with? Robt.

Me:

You could mention these as artificially toned because I 100.000000% guarantee they are. If you don't believe me go to coin community forum and ask the guys there

Him (repeated for some reason):

I told you about the origin of the coins as I know it. I make no claims about how the coins got this way because neither I nor the owner knows. I am not a coin or metal expert. Is there anything else I can help you with? Robt.

Me:
Come on man, thats honestly such a cop out response. If you have no idea, why don't you learn about coins and visit the forum? I'd want to make sure I knew about what I was selling = /

Him:

You started out this by trying to decieve me with a friendly question. I answered it. Now you're trying to tell me how to spend my time? You don't even know me. I use e-bay to buy and sell things. You should do the same. OK MAN.

Me:

I know enough about ebay to know that tons of sellers use the "I am not a coin dealer and I know nothing about coins" excuse so they can sell overrated junk, if thats not the case then it should be easy for you to ask some other knowledgeable people whether the coins are artificial or natural toning, just to see if I'm right or not!

lol what a joke (seller ID in discouraged sellers list)

Got to admit, he didn't start selling coins until Oct of last year and he has sold a bunch so his answer has a ring of truth to it.Worst I could see was that he didn't pack them correctly.

Here's my take on it...

When I started selling on ebay about 10 years ago, alot of it was a huge learning curve and involved trial and error. And like this guy claims, I was selling stuff I didnt know much about both for myself and for friends who didnt have ebay accounts. So his claims of selling for another individual and not knowing alot about them is possible.

Even now, I sell stuff on ebay that I don't know alot about. If I can make money buying and reselling something without having to spend hours of research and as long as I am making the proper disclosures in the listing then why not buy/sell for a profit? I can't be an expert in everything that I buy and resell and I don't expect any other seller to be that way. So long story short, this guy may be doing as he says so unless we know with 100% certainty that he is purposely being deceitful or breaking rules, to make statements like these seems a bit unfair.

Also, his feedback is solid, as are his DSR's especially for item as described. The fact that these coins are going for about what they sell for at coin shops and coin shows for common circulated silver dollars tells me that the buyers are aware of the value of these. Maybe he is enhancing the story about the estate and these toners being at the bottom of the bag, but maybe not and we dont know but are making more assumptions on his story and his intentions.

I think some of us are a little quick to judge other sellers and to make assumptions on their intentions. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but we have to be careful to walk the fine line between stating our opinions as protected under free speech laws and making libelous statements about a seller that could permanent damage their reputation and potentially affect their livelihood.

For the record, I agree that these appear to be artificially toned, but we don't know if it's the seller doing it, the guy he bought them from or if they were done by another.

I have to agree with coinhunter. If I had inherited or received some stamps I would just sell them on ebay and not really research the different grades, different forms and etc. I think explaining what an AT coin is and why many people negatively view the sellers of those coins would have been better han automatically assuming he was being deceptive and artificially toning them himself. He doesn't seem overly deceptive or moronic from his emails and deserves the benefit of the doubt IMO.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't see the link Bherring posted of the seller's ID. After looking at his auctions I have to admit that it does seem fairly suspicious and the coins are definitely AT. I've put items up with a no returns policy before so I don't think the "no returns" policy is always a good factor when judging a seller's legitimacy.

This is what scares me about these sellers. Some newbie will buy a few of these, join the CCF, then share their proud purchase with us only to have us tell him or her the bad news.
Just by his very description of these coins, you know this guy knows what he is doing, oh and, no returns accepted...clown.

And no returns only applies to newbies, if you know what you're doing and the person is a jerk/tries to scam you, you can just play the game and force a return.

Shadow in my experience most people are all too willing to lie to themselves to turn a buck. It's not so much that he doesn't know, it's that he doesn't want to know. And you're forcing him to pull back his source of income and look at his conscience, and he isn't wild about that. There's nothing you could say to this guy that could influence him -- he'll either feel guilty about it one to day to the point that he stops, or he'll sell-out for the cash and never bother.

Another possibility: perhaps assembly-line toners from the Chinese?
