I had these pennies in a Coinmaster album made by Harco that I got as a kid in a coin collecting set. All these pennies were shiny and new looking when I put them in probably about 40 years ago. I recenty decided to put them in a Dansco 8100 so I could work on getting the entire Lincoln set in one book. Well as I started removing these coins I noticed they were very sticky. This old album had the coins in full contact with a clear plstic on both sides. Very few of the coins are shiny bright and most have a bluish hue when you look in a certain direction at them. Most are dark like the 1968-D. Did the album make these coins turn like this? Are they ruined?

A 40 year old Coinmaster album almost certainly has PVC pages which will definitely ruin coins. Sticky coins and green rings left in the album pages are sure signs of PVC residue.

The plastic reacted with the metal and caused toning.

we should never trust any album for more than 5 years. It is better that you put these coins in coin holders, then insert them in to albums, that would be safer. For every 5 years you can change the coin holder, then put a new one, insert the same in the coin album. Ok what has been done, is in the past, ok let us part with the sad part, let us find some good replacement coins.
warm wishes.

The pennies pictured, for the most part, appear to have fairly normal toning. PVC usually leaves a thick greenish residue that is unsightly and hard to remove. I think the coins may have reacted a bit with the enclosure to form some interesting toning but I'll leave it to BadThad to provide some better analysis :)

I think they look great!
Before putting them in a new album, I'd rinse every single one of them with acetone. You definately do not want any sort of sticky residue on your coins.

Far from ruined IMO, unless you don't like toning, I happen to look for Lincolns like this and buy them purposefully based on just this type of toning.
To me those coins are both beautiful and natural.

That was my first reaction as well. I think they are beautifully toned. PVC, at least not yet that I can see.

Yeah, to be honest I think those look great. They seem naturally toned to me. My '09 VDB is toned exactly like your 68D and I love it.

I'm not a big fan of toned coins but those look really great. You mentioned some were sticky so take the Acetone advise to remove whatever that was. Not sure of that brand but sounds like the glue that they used to put the album together was absorbing moisture and this is what is effecting your coins. Quote: Are they ruined?
ABSOLUTELY NOT. In fact if you go to ebay you would see coins like yours selling for more due to that toning. Also, there are Toned Coin web sites for people that just love toning on coins. Almost makes one think you should keep placing coins in that Album to produce more and more toned coins. As I said I'm not a big fan of toned coins but those would sell for a lot more than if not toned.

biokemist6 is exactly right. It takes about 10 years to darken copper and bronze coins held in 2x2 cardboard holders which are kept in clear PVC album pages. If you just put unprotected coins direct into PVC pockets in an an album, the coins will darken even more quickly.
That's one sort of patination you DO NOT want. The resulting overall effect is to have album full of very dark metallic disks. Unpleasing.
Keep your 2x2's in album pages that are NOT made of clear PVC. Such albums are more expensive to buy, but are worth it. If you have say 300 or so coins in an album with coins at a value of say $5 each, that's a $1500 dollar investment you are trying to protect.

Thanks for your comments everyone! I do feel a lot better now. I will rinse the coins with the acetone to get the sticky off. I was just worried that the PVC in the old plastic pages had discolored the coins. Sounds like the toning is a pleasant surprise!
