Just as the title says... what currencies do you collect? I'm not talking about having a coin or two from a currency, I mean which currencies form part of your main collection?
For me:
US Dollar Canadian Dollar New Zealand Pound New Zealand Dollar Newfoundland Dollar
I know, I know. I'm all over the place. Of course, I have coins from other currencies but I feel these form my main collection. It is what it is. What about you? Edited by canadanz 01/19/2011 9:46 pm

When it comes to currency, I only collect them for short periods of time. They only last as long as I keep away from stores, coin shows, coin stores and now really bad is gasoline. I collect currency, put them in my wallet, take them back out to give to people in those places.

Going by sheer numbers my main areas are, primarily
Great Britain (pence/pounds) Germany (pfennig/marks) India (paise/rupees) Thailand (satang/baht)
and secondary
US (cents/dollars) Spain (centimos/pesetas) Australia (pence/cents/dollars)
And then, like svslav, anything/everything else.

I really only recommend U.S. coins, start off with key dates, your money won't go as far, but these are the coins that seem to stay in demand. If you are a real currency lover. You owe it to yourself to study up on U.S. currency, know what is rare, which will appreciate. Foreign coins should only be purchased for their precious metal values until you can really learn about them. Foreign coins are a whole new ball game, which require you to study a whole new field.

Actively I collect coins from around here (Euro Area) plus some neighboring countries (rest of EU, Switzerland), and the US because I regularly go there. Mostly modern pieces; and especially when it comes to collector coins, I get just the ones that I find interesting. Coins from other parts of the world I usually do not buy.

I have SOME coins / notes of almost all of the countries / currencies mentioned above.
Have been collecting World on a budget for 30 + years. I cheat (in an honest way).
My technique is to only look for coins that appear to be a real bargain with a bias for best condition. Each item must have some sort of special interest when I buy it. My main sources in order of importance are postal bid auctions, coin shows, dealers. Average price paid : around $15, but have been successful bidder at $ hundreds. Have perhaps 2500 world coins and maybe 200 notes.
However my first love is ancients and medieval. Have perhaps 300 coins in this area, with some gold. (no notes though!).
Hmmmm. I wonder if I should write a short treatise on ancient Roman banknotes?

I believe the answer to your question is, "yes". I collect coins from all currencies and eras: ancient Greek drachmae and Roman sestertii, Byzantine folles and Islamic dirhams, Chinese cash and Indian tankas. In more modern times (post-1450), the following currencies are those for which I have more than 50 coins: Australian pound Australian dollar US dollar Canadian dollar British/English pound French franc German Federal Republic deutschemark German Imperial mark Indian rupee Belgian franc Netherlands gulden New Zealand pound New Zealand dollar Austrian schilling Philippines peso Japanese yen Italian lira Singapore dollar Hong Kong dollar Swiss franc Spanish peseta Danish krone Greek drachma Thailand baht Malaysian ringgit Finland markka Communist Chinese yuan USSR rouble And if you count the Eurozone as a "single currency", then the euro would definitely be included, too.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Sorry, I'm going totally off on a tangent now. It's just that sometimes you see something and a thought strikes you ... Quote: Thailand baht In Uzbek language "baht" (where h is not silent) means "happiness". I think I just found a direct relationship between money and happiness!
