hello, I am posting this for a family friend whos father has passed away, she has inherited a nice sized lot of all kinds of coins, we have found this coin that is deffinately ancient, and I'm thinking that it is greek, but could possibly be roman, or egyptian. We would like to know the value, and/or specifications, and/or history of this coin if possible. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. please email me with all of your suggestions. thanks very much!

p.s. she has literally a couple pounds of 90 percent 64 and previous us silver coins, and a couple ounces of misc. gold nuggets.

Thank you very, VERY much!

Heres the links to all the photos I have taken of this coin:

Not being an expert on Greek coins ... allow me to suggest this site for examination:

The coin appears to be a tetradrachm of King Lysimachus of Thrace, a "star on throne" type with a long-torch mintmark to the left. See this example on Wildwinds.

While your coin isn't listed on the FORVM fakes database, I am a bit worried about the colour; for something that's supposed to be fine silver, it looks a bit greenish in your pics.

A quick test would be weight. A genuine tetradrachm of this type should weigh between 16.5 and 17.3 grams.

wow, thank you thank you thank you! looks like I found the right community for info and help with this! I HIGHLY appreciate everyones help, especially you, SAP! THANKS! I will meet up with her again ASAP and weigh this coin, as well as research wildwinds and FORVM

and thank you too, VERY much: pls !

I really hope this is not a fake, and I will be meeting up with her tmw evening to weigh it, and do a lil more extensive research, based on the info I have already received.

One question, prolly google can answer, and I will go and check that next, but, anyone know approx. how much the goin rate for one of these coins in this condition would be worth if it is NOT a fake?

I quote bobby1313: "Send an email with either the photo you would like to use attached or a link to the photo. Send it to Susan@coincommunity.com.

Please do not try to crop or resize the photo yourself, Susan will do it."

Also, I'm greatly relieved that SAP didn't immediately pronounce your coin a fake. It really is a handsome one.

ya, thats what I was thinkin, it is a super nice lookin coin for its age, and judging by the other coins that this deceased person owned, I'm assuming it should not b a fake, as it was probably found with a metal detector in a remote location. I should be meeting up with her (new owner of the coin) tmw and weigh it, and do some more research. I too, agree that this coin is VERY beautiful and would buy it from her asap if I was not in such a tight financial situation with rent and bills and such. well. I will send in that pic to "susan" to get my profile pic updated. so, is "susan" a "bot" or a person? lol sorry if I'm being too specific for some.

The one in the link I posted above sold for $775, but it's a sharper strike and in better condition. $300 to $400 would probably be a more realistic price for yours.

Entirely human, so give her a week or so to respond to your request.

I am afraid that this is a cast fake. The details are soft and there is evidence of casting on the surfaces of the coin. I was looking at the pics and hoping to get a view of the edge... when I reached the edge image all my suspicions were confirmed. There is a very clear casting seam and evidence of filing around the edge of the coin which is the real clincher here and enough to confirm the fake cast nature of this one.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

People that make these fakes are without honour. Countries that make no effort to discourage such activities are, in my opinion, as dishonourable. With China clamping down on illegal media coping maybe that will spill over into our hobby. I truly doubt it. It's funny we never hear about US, UK or Canadian forgeries. The RCMP in Canada have made effrots to curb such problems. This was a direct result of collector pressure. It's up to us to influence our law makers. ebay and other such sites have been given a free ride for far to long. ebay should ban all sales from China until this gets sorted out.

Meldercat,
There was a notorious fake ring on ebay a few years back (maybe 4/5 years ago) called "the Toronto Group", which created short lived accounts, selling, quite successfully, modern cast fakes in private on-day auctions. They were named as such due to all their ebay accouns being in Canada and primarily in Toronto. This is no real indication of their actual location per se but people actually dealing with them found them to all be living in / near Toronto based on mailing addresses, franking on packages etc. They operated quite successfully for about 18 months to 2 years. They had eastern European names and the original source of the coins was likely Bulgaria, which is one of the prime sources for fakes sold on ebay in recent times and even today.
Whilst China is the source for many fakes on ebay, Bulgaria seems to be the source of the majority of Ancient coin fakes that I have seen on ebay in recent years.
They used to sell directly from Bulgaria but have now branched out and have resellers in France, Germany and the United Kingdom who act as the front end for the distribution of the fakes sourced from Bulgaria. This is just to make people aware of the way that these folks operate.
They continue to produce new varieties, primarily cast fakes, which are difficult to spot in the general low quality images seen on ebay and seem to fool quite a lot of people who have the coins in hand given the feedback one sees on ebay.
I have had the "pleasure" of looking over multiple such coins purchased by a friend and they look and feel wrong in hand and show many faults under minimal magnification. The sellers are quite willing to refund your money rather than risk any negative feedback and will retaliate with name calling responses to negative feedback even though they are unable to leave negative feedback any more. They will then pursue grievance proceeding under ebay rules to have such negative feedbacks removed this maintaining a high, flawless feedback rating.
I agree that these people have no honour and I have attempted to have many dozens of such sellers closed down but they continue to reappear. I am an admin on the Fake reports database on Forum Ancient Coins and try and keep abreast of fakes as much as possible.

Rant over. I am sorry I started typing and got carried away!

Regards,
Martin

My understanding is that ebay will not allow listing regarding reproductions or "fantasy" coins unless the coins are so marked?

no worries, keep on "ranting" and/or "informing" others with all of this GREAT information. I have deffinately learned a decent amount of knowledge since I have posted this, so, lets keep this post "alive" and keep the responses coming! as well, I am dissapointed that there are even people living on "our" planet earth doing such things to people who do not know the difference. MARIDVNVM; Thank you very much for this information, and do not worry about "ranting", I do the same such thing on pretty much ALL responses, coments, forums, etc. so I "feel" ya! lol
