I plan to buy a dated 1916 slq eventually, but want to continue gathering opinions since it will be a massive purchase. I have probably set a record for starting the most threads about this date...but what can I say, maybe I'm obssessed. Anyways, here are 2 very different F-15 PCGS 1916 slqs, both priced nicely in my opinion.

The first has nice surfaces darkly toned, but appears either weakly struck or a bit overgraded:

The second one appears very strong for the grade, but I'm thinking it may have been silently net graded due to the slash on the shield:

Which would you rather have and why?

I don't believe those are strike issues on the first one. Looks like good ole wear and yes, overgraded IMO. I will go one step further and even say an old cleaning.

I like the second coin much better and yes, may even slide into the VF category. Even though it has that scratch across the shield, it has much better eye appeal and appears to be original. Stronger date and devices too.

i too like the second one more. I like the strong date a lot more, and I think overall it has better eye appeal.

I definitely like the second coin better. I feel the condition is nicer and it is more detailed. I would go for that one if I had the choice.

If I had to buy one of the two it would be the second one. Just has a better look to it in my opinion. Too bad about the scratch though.

definitely the second one....what surprises me though is that PCGS graded either one of them......the second with the scratch on the shield and the first with the scratch marks on the reverse. I've sent coins to them that I couldn't even see anything and they sent them back saying they were 'scratched', most recently a 21 unc buffalo in to them and it came back with that comment and being ungraded, of course. I had to look at the reverse through a loupe to find it. good news is that I learned my lesson......I will never send anything to them again.

PCGS has really turned me off in the past few years. Their service fees are ridiculous and yes, they seem to pick and choose what they will grade an not grade (genuine - ungradable?) I sent a 1917 SLQ to PCGS which came back bodybagged back in the day, cleaned. Bahh! I sent same coin to NGC, AU55FH.

Thank you all for your inputs!

I agree with what you are saying to an extent. However, I think top TPGs are and always will be more lenient with high grade coins that have problems, depending on the severity of the problem. It used to make more sense several years ago when they wouldn't even slab a problem coin, but I think they are cracking down more now-adays though since they will still put a problem coin in a slab.

Anyways, I agree that the second one is overall more eye appealing and is awesomely detailed for the grade; but that slash is extremely distracting the more I look at it. It's the first thing I notice when looking at the coin, and I know it would bug the heck out of me. If it wasnt for that mark, I would love that coin and be really tempted.

I do like the look of the first one, but I cant see it grading past a VG-10 with today's standards. They both seem priced fairly though, and that is a big factor with such an expensive coin.

The colorfully toned G-4 that I posted several weeks ago I think is one of the best eye-appeal wise for the grade, just priced a bit high. The seller said he would come down $100 or so....it might barely be enough for me to reconsider.

dont make an investment this large without loving the coin, if neither of these will fully please you, then wait for another to come to the market.
