Hi, I am looking at some stuff on ebay. I just want to make sure I dont get ripped off. I read a lot of that going on lately too. How do I know if these items are the real deal? How do I know I am paying a good price for them? I am looking at a lot of silver quarters. How do I know if they are really silver? How do I know if they are really quarters and not fakes? Thanks a lot for your help :) -Jo

Before you spend the first cent on currency or coins spend some on reference materials. $20 each will get you a Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Government Paper Money and a Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins Volume 1 - Numismatic Issues
COINS and COIN PRICES magazine usually have a Canadian Trends issue in March. Canadian Coin News is another recommended reference. It has Trends also, but in $CND, not in $USD.

If you are worried that a lot of silver coins may or may not be real...be sure to check the sellers feedback. Anything lower then 100% I always check the feedback left for the seller to see why they received negative feedback. Also pay attention to how many transactions they have on ebay. I usually like to make sure the seller his at least 100 transactions with the majority of them as sales. Of course that number will vary depending on what the item is and how bad I want it. :) Go with your gut. If you feel uncomfortable...do not bid. Do some research on what you are interested in buying. Know your melt value of silver coins if that is what you are interested in buying. Be sure to read the sellers description completely and understand what they are saying. Are you buying the coins to collect or for their bouillon value. There is quite a few questions you need to make a decision about before making a purchase. I learned that the hard way. LOL! Good luck and have fun. This is a excellent hobby.

Fake Canadian coins tend to be key dates and usually in nicer grades. If you are buying coins like this and you really want to be careful higher price coins should be bought from a reputable dealer. Feedback ratings are also a very good indicator.

Hi !
Fake coin can be absolutly any coin, I know a men that it make some search on fake coin's and I buy around 50 fake coin's that I had see. It can be anything, I see fake coin's with value of 2-3$ in F-VF condition. Some of his coin's need a lot of her time to determinate that it's a fake, it just make more and more search because the seller tell it that it's fake. He must work with photoshop and some other tools to see the difference... I'm sure that for a lot of them that any grading compagny will not see the fake and grade them like genuine coin's.
For fun I will try to contact him to have a scan... if he accept you can be very surprised.
THanks !

As above, try to know what you are buying and find market prices (JandM's has prices) and Charltons guide. Try to buy from people with lots of sales (more than a few hundred at least). Try to buy from people with 100% feedback...this being said, feedback means almost nothing. Many of these "power-sellers" use a lot of aggression and intimidation to keep their precious feedback score. So a guy with 100% may just be really good at damage comtrol. I've been banned from buying from many sellers just because I asked them questions about their item (if they think you are on to their scam they won't sell to you) and keep their feedback strong. Above all, try to learn as much as you can about what you are buying...and always check the shipping price (some of these guys charge huge amounts to cover any losses they may suffer on the bids). I've spent a lot of money on junk...I accept that this will happen on ebay. That being said, I've been able to find a winner or two as well so it evens out. If someone rips you off...leave them negative feedback. It's the only way we can tell others what happened. Have fun but keep an open mind!
