In December J&M advertised a bulk lot sale stating they had 100,000 large cents on sale.I was in their store a couple of days before Christmas to pick up a coin and asked the owner if it wasn't a typo.He said they were selling quickly and there were only about 85,000 left, would I like to see them.He led me through a series of locked rooms and vaults pointing out bins and boxes full of large cents. The majority by far were Georges, but I would estimate about 10,000 Victorias.I'm sure that they had all been searched and anything worthy of submission had been sent to ICCS,but just to see that many in one place was thrilling. It made me wonder, how many large cents still exist?Does this hoard represent a significant portion of the large cents? Or is it merely a drop in the ocean?

I would estimate (but just a WAG) that 10,000 Victorias would be about 1% of what is left. I think that Dan in CL and I have maybe 6-7,000 between us, possibly more. The 10,000 that J&M have is only 1/10 of 1% of what the 1859's were .. and there were lots of Vicky's minted in the ensuing years. They averaged a little more than 6 million Geos for each of the 10 years that they made those. I think that 85,000 Geos would be still be way less than 1% of those. The Eds I think are underpriced, especially for higher grades and many were weakly struck to boot. When more US collectors get run out of their market because of the prices, they will look to the North to see some real bargins. Even a supercommon Vicky with a mintage of 4 million is worth about $25 if it were a US small cent in crap condition .. something you can pick up here in a junk box for a buck.

I saw the add for J&M as well. That is an awful lot of large cents in one spot. It brings up a question in my mind. Accumulator-hoarder-collector, what are you? http://victorialargecents.blogspot.com/

Dan you are not a hoarder, you are doing meaningful research.I am a hoarder.I hoard Edward 25cents,after getting rid of the G's and then the VG8's I still have over 500 left and can't bring myself to part with them,it's a compulsion.

You can be assured that you will NOT find and treasures in a J&M hoard!!! Unless you are searching for yet unknown varieties......

JandM's advertises 1 cent rolls from 1953 to date as "BU original brilliant uncirculated coins". Is this to say these rolls haven't been opened and searched? For example if I bought a 1962 roll could I expect normal odds for finding a harp or DD cent?
Thanks.

DBM, DAN and company, I am not a "hoarder, and I am a collector. I am also doing research on the 1859-N9, in particular. In that interest and respect,I am also looking for these coins in the F-12toF20 grade, and it is not important if they have been cleaned etc, as the dies are the point of interest. There are several who are doing this, and I am one of them. Not that I am an expert, nor do I have a site. I have about 150-175 Vickys, and would like to obtain about 250 total. that should give a fair POP % The J&M ad, I don't think would do me much good, so Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain 50-100? I don't know how legal this post is, so if it is not properly placed, please do the "honors", and let me know where to look for it. Please email. or PM with any questions. Thank you for looking, and for any help, or advice, Dick

I have heard through the grape vine that J & M Coins is moving. I don't know where to though. I was in the shop last week and you had very little room in the aisles because there were boxes on top of boxes of coins. Rows on top of rows also. Even though I saw one person bring in bags of coins where they had to use the machine to count the number of coins, IMHO, I believe they are preparing to move and want to lighten the load a little.

I expect they have been well searched. But it would be nice to see that many all in one location.
