Good morning. I read several times in this forum that there are differences between Canadian and USA grading. I tried to search online, but I didn't find anything. Can somebody explain me the differences? I'm still learning how to grade an USA coin and I would like to learn to grade a Canadian one, because I am starting a collection of Victorian cents and five cents and I don't want to undergrade or overgrade a coin. Thank you

There is "Standard Grading Guide for Canadian & Colonial Decimal Coins" by Charlton and Willey. It's available at Colonial Acres Coins and quite often can be found on ebay.I believe it's about $20

Canadian coins are graded from the Obverse. This is the side of the coin that carries the effigy (portrait of the king or Queen). Online there should be sites that give examples of each grade. Good luck

What, soccerdad, said.. and Canadian coins seem to be concave on the obverse side which always wears the fastest.

I have heard that, most of the time, US TPG will grade at least one point higher than Canadian TPG.

Get a good book, like mentioned.

You can get a idea here online: http://www.ottawacoinclub.com/Gradi...n_Coins.html

But a good book is a must.

Here's a link to a useful site for grading

Canadian coins are graded from the Obverse.
Though the obverse is a great indicator for wear and condition of a coin, and grading of Canadian coins is weighted heavily in favour of the obverse, the reverse must always be taken into consideration.

I think you made a typo.Convex surfaces wear faster, and can be found on either the reverse or obverse, depending on date and denomination.

The first coin, graded by PCGS,is certainly more worn than the ICCS coin. The PCGS coin is actually VF by Canadian standards. This type of overgrading by PCGS tends to be the rule rather than the exception.
