Here is a 1993 D with one of those strange look to the MM. I found no listings for MM for 1993 D's so posting here for comments :)

Looks like a split in the plating, which you will find a lot on these. From 1990 on (I think), they started adding the mintmark to the hubs rather than punching them by hand, making RPM's a thing of the past.

Can you see the zinc?

Yes I think I see the zinc but can't see it magnified enough to know for sure. Very frustrating to not be able to see the little things like mint marks and other smaller details.

Any time you see exposed zinc (silver color) around a mintmark you are seeing a split plating during the strike issue. Very common and no premium value.

Thanks guys. I remember mentions in other posts about zinc showing. Too bad my scanner doesn't show some things clearer like photographs do. My magnifying glass isn't strong enough to see such little details but it does look a bit lighter in certain angles under the light with the magnifying glass, though not clear at all ... I suspect it's zinc showing, so yes, a plating split. Will hang onto it until I can see it properly though (but I hang onto ALL of my US cents anyways )
