right so I got this coin and looked all other the net spent a good part of 3 hours looking for it and well given up nd asking you guys. I hve no ide what it could be except that it must hve been made during the reign of queen mary due to it saying MDG ROSA SINE SPINA on the side where it looks like a basic rose head. On the other side it says CIVI TAS LON DON. I found plenty written like that but the side where it looks like a rose head does it for me I cant find any that looks even remotly similar. so can I get help on identifying and valuing this coin?
in basic the coin is small about 17mm in diametre has what looks like a flower (rose I think) head on one side with the words MDG ROSA SINE SPINA written around it on the other side is a cross that runs to the edge of the coin and splitting the words so they read CIVI TAS LON DON while having a small-ish circle on the inner part of the coin making 4 quarter points with 3 little circles in each of them... any ideas?

There are plenty of folks on here who can help, but they're going to need decent photos of the obverse and reverse. Also, would you be able to weigh the piece, to the closest .1 of a gram?
Welcome to CCF

It stands for : (rough translation) "Maria by the grace of God, A Rose without a thorn" This was the inscription on the penny of Mary I of England. The Civitas London = City of London.
There are many modern copies and restrikes. Pictures and weight are needed.

During the third coinage of Edward VI, 1550 - 1553, the penny had a rose design and had legends E.D.G. ROSA SINE SPINA, and CIVITAS LONDON on the reverse (provided it was minted in London). Previous designes bore an image of the monarch instead of the rose. Mary followed, ruling alone 1553/54. Her silver penny coin also had her effigy. There is a controversy about the existence of a base metal rose penny with the legend as you state, there's no definite proof that there is one! I believe your coin is a humbug (Kinda like an aluminum 1974 cent over in our US coins friends' forum )!

To clarify: I'm not saying you, daunzey, are pulling our legs, we welcome you to our happy family!
But I don't believe that what you have is a real coin!

daunzey, I don't think we can give you a conclusive opinion on this coin, especially based on small pictures. If it is a real rose penny of Mary it would be a numismatic marvel! You should take it to a reputable dealer, not just some corner store. Am I correct to assume you're in UK? Schedule a trip to London and plan in a visit to Spink or Coincraft, the big boys. Years ago I had a British oddity and I emailed my question (with detailed photographs) to a couple of officers of British Numismatic Society (found them through an internet search engine). They were all nice enough to respond. So, that would be another option. Good luck with your quest, and I'd be very interested in its outcome, if you could keep us posted!

An afterthought: how have you come into possession of this coin? You have a better chance that it is genuine if it was in your (or somebody's) family for generations. If you just recently acquired it on ebay or a coin/trinket shop chances are it's a fake.

I'll check out my book on Scotish and Irish coins. I'm not familar with a long cross rose penny from Mary I.

Unfortunately, Meldercat, the site is incomplete. It doesn't have any Mary's pennies.
