Hi, Have had this very nice 1872 cent for quite a while now and am really considering selling selling it. As I live in the UK is there any coin grading companies based in the UK? And is a coin like this worth grading then selling or just selling as I coin, I would like to get as much as I can for it so any advise would be gratefully received.
(Sorry it is not very clear as I'm typing with a broken arm at the mo)
Regards,
Will

I don't know of any TPGs in Europe, but if I was selling it, I would have it slabbed by a reputable grader (NGC, PCGS, ANACS) in order to get the most money for it. IME, with a coin like that, you can usually make up the cost to have it graded. I would then put it on ebay or some other auction site. It looks to me to be an XF-40 piece which is worth about $500.

Hello Coinage123,
Your coin looks about as nice as some certified AU-50 examples on the Heritage auction site. I agree that this coin merits certification by PCGS, NGC, or ANACS and you will get your best return if it is graded. Check the grading service websites to compare prices and shipping. I believe they will all ship internationally (for a price!). You might also want to check with local dealers to see if one can send in your coin for grading. If you go with ANACS you should be able to send it yourself; the other services require a paid membership if you want to submit coins directly.

Another option would be to sell it as is. If you can get $600 USD I'd say that would be a good price. I wonder how many Indian Head cent collectors there are in the UK? Even if there are only 2, get them to compete over your beautiful cent and you could get top dollar!

I agree it should be in a reputable holder in order to get the most money for it at the sale. You can send it in to ANACS without having to join any collectors club like you would have to do with NGC and PCGS. If you wanted the most money PCGS seems to bring more money than the other two big ones but that doesn't really mean they are better, just at time of sale they usually bring the most which seems to be what you are looking for

I cannot veiw the picture. I'm in the military and some sites are blocked for no reason. I just recently started selling graded coins verses raw coins. In high dollar coins I usually see anywhere from $20-$100 more for a graded coin. I think most people like the fact that they know exactly what they are getting and are willing to pay more for it.

I agree with the others. I would get it graded by PCGS in order to get the highest selling price. I would imagine a local coin dealer could submit it for you.

Buyers will bid with a lot more confidence if they know it is a genuine, problem-free coin.

All of the PCGS Authorized Dealers in the UK are located in London- http://www.pcgs.com/Dealers/Default...UK&rn=5&mn=5

NGC has one located in Northhampton- http://www.ngccoin.com/services/dea...p?state=U.K.

That's a nice 1872. I put at XF45. I agree with the other posts, send it to a reputable TPG.

Thank you for all of your replies, the list of the certified PCGS dealers you gave me, does that mean I could have the coin graded and slabbed in the UK or will I send it to them so they can send it to the US? Also would you recommend that I sell it to a person in the US if I have it packed well and insured?

The dealers in the UK will have to send the coin to PCGS in the US to be graded.

And that might be better because they will be used to dealing with customs. There have been reports of people in Europe sending their coins to the US for grading and then getting hit for customs duties and VAT taxes for having their own coins returned to them.

Getting the coin slabbed means more money and heavier bidding interest. I'd sell it in an auction and offer free shipping or shipping at a minimal cost. Many people don't like to pay the shipping fees and you would probably have more interest due to this. Make the buyer think that he or she got a little bonus or deal along with purchasing the coin from you. That is what I would do anyway. Good luck with the sale of your cent.
