Guys, I apolofize for the redundancy as I did post this coin elsewhere, but it generated little interest, so I thought I'd try here - note the lines from the motto down past the eagle's head, and, to a lesser extent, below the eagle's left wing (right as you look at the reverse).
It was suggested this may be due to the die being filed to remove an imperfection or maybe polished. I have to assume, if that is the case, there are others with the same lines, but I haven't seen any of them in my 1888S search, so I'm curious - is this a known VAM, or would it be considered just another minor mint error? Thanks for taking the time to check it out.

Ralph

The over polished wings are the most obvious points, but so is the set left or tilted
mint mark...not acknowledged....yet for the over polished VAM 4 nothing about the mint mank is given by photograph or mentioned...it is dramatic enough to have been mentioned... I would reccomemend posting on vamworld to those who would have those examples and could compare your coin to theirs..could be something new. or the over polishing was the prime feature that determines the VAM and nothing else so those other points are not noted... though they should be just to clarify the VAM, and the gouges seem extreme enough to warrant mentioning...

alladinslamp - I have no idea how to do that.
I'm just a shade tree collector, and my knowledge of errors, varieties, and VAMS is about one rung up from nil.
Is that a site where I have to join in order to post my coin for viewing? Or, can I post it without membership? And, how would I go about it?
I am curious about the coin, but not so curious that I want to jump through a bunch of hoops to find out about it.

I would VAM your coin as follows: VAM 4 III2 1 C3c (Overpolished Wing) (187) I-2 R-3
Reverse C3c -Eagle's right wing is overpolished in the middle. Fine diagonal polishing lines throughout the wing.

It appears the lines from the motto down past the eagle's head are planchet striations.
