So, is there a way that I can take a price guide with me to the coin shop, or some sort of printable price guide? Maybe even a magazine or something I could take along with me

I collect small range, so I can just use a custom spreadsheet, for others this won't work, it would all depend on what you are shopping for, I guess.

You can download and print the greysheet from https://www.greysheet.com for $4.

This is the pricing used by most coin dealers I know and will be a little more realistic expectation of prices.

Just write a 'want list' for yourself, with the prices that you are prepared to pay, for the coins that you are interested in. I have seen lots of customers at dealers doing this. It is a good way to collect if you are a specialist, in say, LWC's.

I can see no wrong with this sort of ethic.

For me, I don't bother with that, and the reason is that I have been mooching around coin shows and dealers for decades. But then again, I have been into ancients and world coins of all centuries, so a 'want list' would be impractical for me.

I thought we already addressed this, but maybe it was someone else. RedBook will give somewhat of a bearing though it will usually be high on key dates and such , but low on prices involving bullion since it was compiled over a year ago. Yes, I agree the with the above on the Greysheet.

This is exactly what I do and it works really well for me. It's a compilation of prices based on Numismedia, Heritage (for the higher end stuff) and ebay completed auctions. I usually have a range of prices to cover the grades close to my target - if I am looking for an XF I will also include VF at the bottom end and AU at the top with my XF in the middle - i.e., 50-90-150.

I've got it all on a single page that I can pull out to reference. No one has ever questioned it - in fact, it usually stimulates some good conversation (and sometimes good deals).

A Smartphone plus NumisMedia.com equals WIN!

I also have my spreadsheet lists rendered into PDF files. I use Adobe Reader to view them on my Droid phone. I could view the spreadsheet in the Document viewer, but the panning and zooming is not as fluid as the Adobe app.

I too make a list of what I need, a list of what I'd like to have and one more for replacing coins. I put approximate prices based on a grade and based on several web sites.
My problem is due to old age when I go to a coin show, I forget to take those with so buy what I see that I like and worry about it all later.

I always use the greysheet as stated above. The wish list is a great idea. I wish I could do that and actually stick to it. I always end up buying something just because I like it. :)

personally I don't worry about the greysheet or Red Book when buying. if I like it and the price is not ridiculous (and in most cases they are) I buy what I like. and most of the time the seller knows he is over priced and will deal with you. if not keep walking you will find another coin you like just a table or two away
