Hello all Was looking at this 1878S. The Liberty looks like it could be doubled. Then the edge of one of the leaves looks doubled, or is that a weak strike. And almost forgot about the tail feathers, Is that doubling or just the way image appears though Stereo Scope. I'm somewhat new to the Morgans. I haven't really studied more than how to grade them. I do see 1878 Morgans Doubling examples on Coin Facts,PCGS. But it doesn't list any under S MM. Ohh by the way Free 10 day trial to PCGS Coin Facts and Pop Report. You have 10 days to cancel, after 10 days $12.95mo. I used pay pal. I like the site, some great information on their. The pricing does reflect bid wars though, and other oddities. But great help. As always I THANK YOU FOR ALL REPLIES

Hi and , yes there are 1878-s mint marks which have the doubling of liberty. it was a common feature back then as Philidephia made all the dies for all the mints that made coins....A common feature as the procedure for the making of A NEW coin image into a die, had many problems. As they were required to produce and input more silver coinage into the market than ever before....this resulted in some facinating varieties .. and perhaps 1878 could very well be very heart of the whole vamming idea...every possible "error" if you will, can be found in this series......Post some full photo's of what you have..I'm sure there are many here who can help you figure out just one you have, the doubling alone is just one minor point of the whole...

Thanks for the info Aladin, Here is the coin the other photos are from. I used my evo to take pics through the eye lens of my Stereo Scope. Then used Evo to crop and zoom in. I wanted to post these as well cause seeing is believing. Some thing happened to my computer, what ever tells the drivers to load somehow failed(s). So I get error messages on certain apps. or nothing at all when I try to scan. Or I would of posted new pics. And the macro on my cell phone isn't the best So I hope these will do. I was looking over VAM World and am amazed by the attention to detail, Then how the info was broken down and explained. Being able to define the hub(s) has added a whole new enjoyment to Morgans for me. So here is the 1878S Obv & Rev.

You need to look at aladinslamp's post again. Your coin appears to have a "smoking gun" feature which immediately narrows it down to just a few VAMs - the broken "B" in "PLURIBUS."

Agree, aladinslamp has it narrowed down for you. I would suggest you not only use VW, but join also. Good luck!
