I am teaching my 10 yr old daughter about collecting coins and I decided to unwrap a couple of US Mint Rolls of the 2005 Westward Journey Nickels. Several of them had that goldish/copper tone to them. Some much more than others. Out of the 2 rolls, I would say about 15 or so have the toning to them.
Here's my newbie question.......since they are right out of the wrapper, Is it worth grading the ones that show alot of it? The others seem to be around the edges, while a few are on the entire surface.

Or......are they just another coin? I was thinking it would be pretty cool to have them graded so that she can hold on to them. ( A reminder of our time doing it.)

Thanks in advance.

I suggest you find something else in coins as a reminder of your time together. Those nickels are just not worth the grading costs. I would think it would be smarter to find something like a Proof set of your birth year and hers and put them together for that. Or an Uncirculated set from the Mint with those years on them. Possibly one of those plastic pages that hold 20 of the 2x2 flips with a coin of your birth date next to one of hers. Fill the entire page like that.
Lots of other things you could do with coins that are far better than having a Nickel graded and slabbed. In 20 years or so, would loose it's meaning.

Jersey coast
Welcome to the forum

If I had a really cool coin that was toned nice and I wanted to have it slabbed, then I would. I do things for my daughter that are not just to make a profit.

Just so you know, having a coin graded would cost at least 20 to 30 dollars. If your coins come back in the MS66 or MS67, they can be bought on ebay in the 10 dollar range.

The toning might bring the value up a little bit.

Then it comes down to what you want .. and if you want to do something neat with your daughter I say go for it.

Carl, Gold rush,
Thank you both for your replies. You both make perfect sense. Its not so much for the money factor, it was because she was shocked to see the colors. ( because they were new, right out of the rolls). I have just started buying on ebay recently, some great deals too. I am working on the birthday thing now, trying to get some coins & paper for both of us. Shes really into it, so you may see me around here with alot of questions in the future. I have been stalking the site for months. lol.

Thanks again, guys. I think I am more curious as to what would cause this coloration on new coins? I have read several things about doctoring, acid, weather, elements, but I didnt realize it happens right from the mint?

Thanks again! Appreciate the advice.
