I bought a coin I shouldn't have. Some time I don't know why I do what I do.... I won this quarter for $4.78: So I write the seller an email: quote: My 1908-O Barber quarter arrived yesterday. I'm sorry to say, I was not really pleased with its condition. While the details are VG or so, the coin appears highly polished, making it worth no more than $2.50.
I am considering returning the coin, but that really wouldn't be worth my while if you only refund the bid price. Are you willing to be flexible and refund a greater amount? Or perhaps make a partial refund?
Thanks for considering,
And he writes back: quote: HI; I WILL BE GLAD TO OFFER YOU A REFUND OF $3.00 ,BUT YOU ARE WAY OFF ON YOUR VALUE AMOUNT.AND THE PHOTO SHOW'S CLEARLY THE BRIGHTNESS OF A CLEANED COIN,I DONT CLEAN THEM.BUT DO GET SOME IN THAT CONDITION, JUST PUT COIN IN ENVELOPE & RETURN IT IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO. THANK YOU
So I ask: - Does the photo clearly show that the coin is cleaned?
- Am I way off on the value of the coin?
- Should I keep it or return it for $3?
Thanks

Hi Texas The photo is no help , its pretty blury,, as far as value goes I guess if your using the RedBook price you would be off ,, but real world pricing for a cleaned Barber quarter of this yearI think your in the Ball park at 2.75 to 3 bucks.I would not pay more than that. If it was me I probly would not go through the hassel of returning it. but I would not purchase from the seller again, especially if He did not list it as cleaned,, but expected the buyer to notice it from his pics. Was 4.78 the total with shipping ? Rick

Hi, Rick Thanks for the response. Most people will tell me that obsessing over a dollar here and there will shorten my life. I thank you for indulging this particular quirk of mine. Yes, $4.78 was the total with shipping. I am glad you agree that the fuzzy pictures are not sufficient to judge the coin has been polished up like a telescope mirror. I shouldn't have bid on the coin and that's on me. If I were using the RedBook, I'd be overpaying for a problem-free coin. Here's the sellers description: quote: This is a 1908-O, Barber quarter. It's in Great Condition!! It has Ton's of Nice Detail's & Great Eye Appeal!! 2007 RedBook TREND'S $9.00 IN THIS GRADE OF VERY GOOD!! PLEASE CHECK MY FEEDBACK'S FOR MY CREDABILITY, THEN IF YOU ARE SATISFIED BID WITH CONFIDENCE!! I DONT GRADE MY COIN'S, I JUST DESCRIBE THEIR DETAIL'S!! AND LET YOU LOOK AT THE PICTURE'S AND DO THE HARD WORK!!! LOL!!
To add insult to injury, he didn't even include the airtite.

I would just chock it up to experience and keep it. Seems like an awful big hassle. I would do as Rick said and just would put them on my black list and never buy from them again.

I agree. It is impossible to tell from those photos whether or not this coin has been cleaned. The seller said the coin was in great condition, he should have said it was in great cleaned condition. Even his little spiel about him not grading his own coins is a cop-out, a way of putting the responsibility onto the purchaser and away from himself.

"TREND'S $9.00 IN THIS GRADE OF VERY GOOD!!" in my opinion that is him grading the coin

Yes, you're right. Well spotted. He basically is grading this coin, isn't he?

I would just keep it and avoid the seller in the future if you are unhappy. Most sellers only offer the purchase price back rarely will one refund the shipping fee.

You can barely make out the date, let alone tell if it was cleaned. Do you mind sharing who the seller was?

The sellers description was contradictory. Great shape/cleaned, do not usually go hand in hand. Fuzzy photo's are usually meant to deceive! Mike

I resisted posting the seller's name or the auction link because I was convinced it was all my fault for bidding on an auction with such lousy pictures. But the comments on this thread have convinced me that it was a poor auction and that some of the blame lies with the seller. His name is bobbysrarecoinsandmore. Mick

I can understand that sellers overgrade or cannot grade ; I can understand they have bad pics
But somebody with so many negatives calling those that gave him a negative bad names would disbar that person from any bidding on my part automatically
Otherwise I would have asked a better pic and if I did not get it I would not have bid either
I think that sending the coin without the holder is the biggest con
