Hi, calgarycoin, Yup.. those are the prices that most dealers are asking. I can't really tell what condition the one you are showing is in, I would like to see the obverse.

Holy cow they can be expensive I only collect pennys nickels and some quarters right now. This is at a auction so if the price is right I might be able to flip it and fund a 1926 far I been looking at.
I have never seen a coin go for more than 125 at this auction and I have been going for about 3 years.

Current CCN trends are: F12 - $900 VF20 - $1,150 EF40 - $1,350 AU50 - $1,500 MS60 - $1,800 MS62 - $2,200 MS63 - $3,000 and upward to infinity.
Also, there are significant made in China and made in Lebanon fakes of this date, so only buy from a trusted source.

If that coin sold for $150.00, it was a Chinese fake.

For $150 probably silver-plated lead.

probably a fake, BUT did you ask yourself the question WHY a 1000$ coin should go for 125? Most auctioneers are not stupid... I have tried to blow up your image....and what I see is definitely a fake... look at the 8 and 4...... Perhaps you should approach the Auction house in hindsight.... IT is illegal to possess Fake Canadian coins... It is a criminal offense... and maybe the auctioneer has a responsibility.... "did not know" does not hold water....

Quote: Perhaps you should approach the Auction house in hindsight.... Might be a good idea just so they can give the $150 back to the buyer. I found the auction house - the coin in question shows up in "this weeks pics". I've sent an email to them. http://www.auctioncalgary.com/

The 1948 silver dollar is probably the most copied of Canadian coins. Research before you buy. I would only purchase from a reputable dealer and/or graded by ICCS or PCGS. Personally, the one in your picture looks wrong in that the voyageur and the native have no detail. Dead giveaway for the copy. $150.00 is way too low for an original. If it is real I'll take 10!

you guys miss the main indicators for a fake...it is not what you suggest... it is the date... Chines fake!!! However, they do actually purposely make them worn and knicked and look bad. think about it.... NO or very little Silver in them. they make a few thousand.. sell them in Beijing or Hong Kong at the markets.. or to some willing Canadian cheating buyers on mail order... for $ 10 a piece if you buy 50..... you figure it out yourself... MOST collectors will never know the difference as they do not have a real one to compare..... there are about a half dozen or so different forgeries. Some from China.... BUT not all of them.
