Check out the facial profile here, especially the upper half. The profile has a raised rim, and edge to it, like the kind you find on a the side of a bottle. It's as if when the coin got stamped/pressed it then shifted away from the profile and left a groove between this raised edge and the surface of the coin. Like 3 D. Any thoughts?

OOps!! I suppose the pic would help, huh?

That is very odd looking. I'd like to see opinions on this. It looks to me like it might be a doubled die.

thingee, you just gave a perfect explanation of machine or Mechanical Doubling. And it is my belief that is what happened on your coin.

Certainly looks like a double die.

I would agree with Becky. This looks like Machine Doubling. There would certainly be doubling on the letters and numbers if it was a doubled die. But this is an extreme case. Cool find!

agreeing with becky on this one being damaged IE. mechanical die damage defined as:'damage' to a coin after the strike due to die bounce/chatter or die displacement. no additional value .fun to find though !!!

Definitely not a doubled die, there's nothing doubled on the coin.

This coin was struck with a die suffering from deterioration due to excessive use, which was very, very common in 1964.
