I don't know if coin terms are universal or not, but here in the US, we'd call that just a die chip. A Cud usually involves the rim. At least for us.

In Australia, any lump of metal on a coin that isn't designed to be there is usually called a Cud. If it's on the rim, it's a Rim Cud.

I read somewhere once that Cud stood for 'coin under developed', but don't know if that's really what it's supposed to mean or not.

Thanks nancyc. The Canadian forum taught me to be careful about throwing around US terms!

As I venture outside the US, Australian coins are definitely one of my favorites.
