I have an ms-70 1946-D Roosevelt dime certified by SGS. Could it actually be ms-70? or close to it? Moved to TPG forum - Sap

"Reliability" and SGS are diametrically opposed to each other. SGS is not a real third party grading company, it is a seller on ebay self-slabbing their own inventory as all MS70 which, of course, is impossible in the real world. In actuality your coin probably grades in the MS63-65 range.

The highest grade that PCGS (probably the most respected grading service) has given a 1946-D dime is MS67 and they have never given a regular business struck Roosevelt dime a MS70 grade so I would say that there is no chance that the SGS dime is anywhere close to MS70. I agree with biokemist6 - it is probably a ms63-65 coin.

I have had some good experience with ANACS as well, so I would lump them a close third behind the other 2 major services. It seems that there are several ebayers grading their own coins and putting thhem up - problem is, they are always overgraded. I agree with the others in their guess of the grade. Nice coin but Ms-70 is an outright lie if you look at the ANA grading standards.....

What bio said...plus, they are known to slab coins with obvious problems. 100% unreliable grades on their slabs! The best thing to do is break the slab and toss in the garbage where it belongs.

Quote: Is a business struck coin one that was made specifically for certification? Paulmvr... Business strike refers to a coin struck for general circulation, Proof coins are struck on special dies, under extra pressure.. made for collectors. So when you hear Business Strike, Uncirculated, Mint Set coins... these are all the same. Hope that helps.

Back to orginal thread.... around here we call SGS... Steve's Grading Service... this company has been taking money from folks for a long time on ebay and on their website. Most of the coins I have seen in an SGS slab, are pocket change... right out of bags.. the floor... the teller drawer... JUST AWFUL... Please don't buy these coins... PCGS, NGC, ANACS, are your best bet.... their are a few others, and they have their place.. but if you stick with those top three, you should be OK.

This has been discussed here to death. It could be a VF20 coin in reality, and SGS will grade it MS70. That's the only grade they know. Stick only with PCGS,NGC,ANACS.

if you could get it for a good price go for it, who cares about the slab. but just make sure you aren't paying ms65-ms70 price. that would not be a great deal.

All the correct advise has been dispensed ... with the following caveat ... The OP is a new hobbyist and uncertain (my opinion) of Third Party Graders ( TPG) ... and their relative rank in terms of being trustworthy. Sooo ... for paulmvr ... your coin graded by SGS might be a lovely coin ... only you can gauge that ... but SGS is a bottom-feeder 'service' intended to make money for the owner and not protect the collector. The best advise any of us can offer is to embrace the hobby and learn to grade/validate coins based on your own knowledge. That's the ultimate goal ... until then ... if you need to rely upon TPG than IMHO it's the top 3 ... PCGS, NCG and ANACS. David

SGS can be "relied upon" to grade every single coin they see "MS70". If it's a heavily circulated coin, they'll clean it until it's nice and shiny and then stick it in an MS70 slab. If the master and commander of SGS ever saw a coin he thought would genuinely grade MS70, he wouldn't waste it by putting it in one of his own slabs - he's send it off to one of the real TPGs.
