That's precisely what a BIE is! The term BIE comes from the glob of metal between the B and E of Liberty, a common stress point in the die. In the late 50s and 1960s the error type was popularized, the term is now often us used to describe any die chip which results in a "blob" on the coin. During the 50s and early 60s, the Mint had issues with die chips, they commonly appear in the date as well. I believe this is because the mint was using lower quality steel for their dies, any impurities in the metal can cause weakness and stress fractures in a working die. BIEs are fun variations, but I'd caution you in paying much of a premium at all, they're great to cherrypick out of rolls, but I've sold them in roll quantity for $5 and was happy to get that! If it's enjoyable to you, then heck yeah!

Nice one fioti...I've found quite a few and they seem to be common in the 50's, but I don't have a nice BU example...cool !

I have some BU coins I held out around here somewhere...now just to remember what I did with them. I have a couple of rolls of them in circ grades - sometimes I get a wild hair and pull them out, but most of the time they frankly go right back in the bag. I, as well as most collectors, have little to no interest in them.

I found a bunch from the same roll that I saved.

Mostly happened because of the extra long continued use of the dies. Thus the so called "poor man's" doubled die for the 1955 & 53 examples. The 1954 coins were terribly bad looking even in BU. I believe the clashes from the wheat stalks caused these to show up. The devices fall over the LIBERTY.
