Gotta be artificial eh? What'd he do, cook it?

I have been looking for a nice '34-P Washington and ran across this one on E-bay.

What gives?

Too many artificially toned coins are popping up on ebay that you have to wonder what is real.
The is a guy on there that has 100's of toned coins, even 2010's. It sucks

I filter them out of my searches. I usually do a -MONSTER (they list a lot of these as Monster Tones!!). Someone explained to me that you can do it with a blow torch. You move the coin closer to the flame or something...

Was reading this thread so jumped up and ran outside an tried it with the cutting torch. Yes you can definitely tone one with a torch, just don't go to far or you will turn it dark blue almost black, with the back side having some rainbow tone. I went ahead and heated both sides to far so that no one in the future can sell it for a toner!! LOL you go to far with a LMC and it bubbles up into a globular mess.

Oldcoach - I don't own tools since I have an allergy, so maybe you can try this for me. I was told that if you have the torch on you can bring the coin towards it (rather than over the flame).

To use the coin pictured in this thread as an example. The coin's rim would have approached the flame closest to the Y in LIBERTY.

Makes sense. Propane probably.
But to do this to a nice coin should be a crime.
Heh heh .... maybe it is.
Numismacide.
I might try some of this on some of my junk silver. I can't say that it is unatractive!

I've bought one by accident before and they're usually not attractive in hand. They usually enhance the color in the photo's plus they alter the lighting. The finish on the one I have is a waxy look. Almost like someone colored it with a crayon.

I wonder how long before this thread is closed, we seem to be moving dangerously close (maybe we are already there) to a discussion about how to tone coins. Not my intent. For my part, I am seeking knowledge to know what to avoid. I hope we can keep it going for a while.

Played around with an unsuspecting 1940 washington. Average condition.
Before:

Rainbow-Toned-Washington

I managed to turn it an ugly dark grey/black. This with a propane torch. Never saw any colors during the process, just shades of black and gray. Tried all sorts of angles, yellow flame, blue flame. Must be a trick to it . . . . . .

Yes, there is a trick- AT does not work well on a heavily circulated coin, you will only succeed in darkening it rather than producing colors.

Lol - I'll let you test on mine!

There are already threads about toning on these forums somewhere, I remember the Taco Bell Napkin on in some detail. Search for that if you like, it was an interesting read IMO.

I don't know where you're located at, but if it's anywhere in Maryland I'd be glad to show you what one looks like. Like I said, bought one on accident. I don't even keep it in a 2x2 and it's a proof coin.

I tried another this afternoon and spent 1/2 hour trying to get a pic that would show the AT, didn't happen. Will say that anyone doing it with a torch is going to have to be extremely patient as the one I did is nowhere near as nice as Joh K's not even in the ballpark. I do believe there is a much better way of doing it but I am not going there, like someone said getting to close to a how to on toning.

I heard baking them in a potato gets some AT. Never tried it. Wow, that fingerprint sure showed up after the AT attempt!
