Hi, I have a coin from Morocco. It says "moroc" "20 Francs"
The other side has a star and 1371. That is obviously not the
date, in the calendar we recognize. Can anyone help. Thanks, Jim

It sounds like Krause (Y) 50 - Aluminum Bronze - 0.25 F, 0.50 VF, 1.00 XF

I think that year translats to 1951

Here's some info on Lunar Hejira calendar that is used in many Islamic countries.

Your coin was struck in Paris, at that time Morocco had the French Protectorate status.

Here is the WorldCoinGallery page for this coin.

Most Middle-Eastern countries date their coins using the Islamic calendar. But most Middle-Eastern countries use Eastern Arabic numerals to write the numbers of the date, which look sufficiently different from our "Western Arabic numerals" for Westerners not to notice or get confused. For example, this Egyptian coin carries both an AD date (on the left) and an AH date (on the right), but they're written in Eastern Arabic numerals.

Only Morocco and Tunisia write the AH date on their coins using Western numerals, and the Tunisian coins like this one are dual-dated. So the confusion only really arises with Moroccan coins.

So the 1371 converts to 1952? Also, thanks for your responses. I really appreciate
them. Jim

There's no one-to-one correspondence between AH and AD dating, because [Lunar] Hejira calendar goes about moon cycles, so their year is shorter and the start of a new year keeps moving around. In particular AH 1371 started on October 2, 1951. So, part of it was in 1951, part in 1952.

There's also Solar Hejira calendar that has the same length of year as we do.
